Boise State football lands commitment from versatile defensive player

The Boise State football program has found a versatile player to fit into one of the team?s most versatile positions.

Mat Boesen of West High in Torrance, Calif., gave the Broncos an oral commitment Thursday. He plays tight end and defensive end in high school and was recruited by some schools as a tight end. His only other offer was from San Diego State, which wanted to bring him in as an athlete and figure out a position later.

Boesen is 6-foot-4, 210 pounds. He also wrestles.

Boise State was the first school to recruit him. Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake told him since Boise State is a frequent Top 10 team, it would be difficult to beat the offer, Boesen said.

?That made me think of how high they are,? he said. ?The coaches are great. I loved everything about it.?

Boesen has been following the Broncos since the 2007 Fiesta Bowl defeat of Oklahoma.

?Ever since that, I?ve always been a fan,? he said.

He said his strengths are his speed, technique and conditioning ? tools that help him defeat the much larger offensive linemen he sees.

?My coach, he?s always saying I?ve got a motor and I?m always finishing first in conditioning drills,? Boesen said.

He has high hopes for football ? even beyond college.

?Football has always been my passion,? he said. ?I?ve dreamed ever since I was little to play college football and make it to the next level after that. ? I told all the coaches that I love both sides of the ball and I?ll play whatever.?

RIM delays new BlackBerry launch; sales crumble

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd delayed the make-or-break launch of its next-generation BlackBerry phones until next year, in a devastating setback to the once-dominant technology company whose sales are crumbling.

Shares of the company, which also announced a steeper-than-expected quarterly operating loss and deep job cuts on Thursday, plunged 14 percent after it said it would release its revamped BlackBerry 10 devices early in 2013. It conceded the development had "proven to be more time-consuming than anticipated."

The delay in releasing the devices - RIM's last best hope of stemming its eclipse at the hands of Apple Inc's iPhone and phones using Google Inc's Android software - confirmed the worst fears of analysts and investors.

The size of the loss, RIM's first in eight years, and the likelihood that sales will keep sliding into 2013, severely reduce the options for the company if it is to survive.

RIM's announcement that it would slash 5,000 jobs, or 30 percent of its workforce, only reinforced the impression of a company that could be in terminal decline.

"It's like watching a puppy die. It's terrible," said analyst Matthew Thornton of Avian Securities in Boston.

"Wow, what a disaster," said Edward Snyder, managing director of Charter Equity Research in San Francisco. RIM is now in "a handset death spiral," he said. "From a numbers point of view, it could hardly be worse, and it's going to deteriorate from here," he said.

RIM, which virtually invented mobile email, has fallen from a leadership position to an also-ran in smartphones over a few years filled with delayed and uninspiring products, service outages and other embarrassments.

Now the new BlackBerry line will miss both the back-to-school and Christmas shopping periods, while the competition brings out new phones with more bells and whistles.

Apple is widely expected to unveil an iPhone 5 later this year, while a slew of manufacturers using Android are constantly pushing out new gadgets. Microsoft Corp is also planning to update its Windows software for mobile devices.

"There's really no guarantee that once they come out on the other side of BlackBerry 10 that it's going to be something that people will want," said Eric Jackson, a hedge fund manager at Ironfire Capital in Toronto.

RIM's board is under mounting pressure to consider unpalatable options such as selling its network business or forming an alliance with Microsoft, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer approached RIM earlier this year looking to strike a partnership similar to the one the software giant has with Nokia Oyj, the sources said. Under that partnership, Nokia will use Microsoft's latest Windows operating system on its smartphones.

In such a scenario, RIM could also look for Microsoft to buy a stake in the company and fund marketing and other expenses, the sources said. However, this option is not attractive to RIM because it would mean the end of the Waterloo, Ontario-based company's technology independence, they said.

Even so, freshman CEO Thorsten Heins gave no indication on a Thursday conference call that he was losing faith in the current tack of cutting costs while waiting for the BlackBerry 10 launch, which is now more than a year overdue. The new devices are now set to land in a slow period when consumers are tapped out after their holiday spending.

"It's akin to launching fireworks underwater," said IDC analyst Kevin Restivo.

JOB CUTS

RIM expects the job cuts to cost $350 million in the current fiscal year. It has pledged to slash $1 billion from its operating costs in the year, but now considers that target as a minimum it will pursue, given the additional BlackBerry 10 delay. It said it had already cut layers of management, streamlined its supply chain and outsourced repair work.

Analyst Shaw Wu of Sterne Agee in San Francisco said RIM would now have to be very careful. "Layoffs are not free - there's a use of cash with that. They have to be very careful with their cash balance. It's a matter of survival now."

RIM's cash position - which has become a focus of concern for analysts as the company dips into the red - increased to $2.2 billion by the end of the quarter, and it aims to maintain that level this quarter.

The company conceded that may slip as it pays severance to reduce the workforce, but it declined to estimate the cash position going into 2013.

Shares of RIM, which have dropped about 70 percent over the past year, were down 14 percent at $7.86 in after-hours Nasdaq trading. At that price, the market is valuing the company at $4.12 billion, a far cry from its once-lofty market capitalization of about $84 billion.

OPERATING LOSS

RIM had warned it would post an operating loss but did not provide specifics. Excluding special items, the loss came in at $192 million, or 37 cents a share, for the first quarter ended June 2. Revenue declined 43 percent to $2.81 billion.

Analysts on average expected a loss of 7 cents a share on revenue of $3.07 billion, according to an informal Reuters poll.

For the year-earlier quarter, RIM reported a profit of $695 million, or $1.33 a share, on sales of $4.91 billion.

RIM said it expected to post another operating loss in the current quarter, as it ships fewer smartphones. It shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the last quarter, only about half of the more than 14 million of two quarters ago. Until now, it had shipped more than 10 million devices every quarter since late in 2009.

RIM sent out 260,000 of its poor-selling PlayBook tablet computers, which it has discounted sharply after initially pricing them at levels comparable with Apple's iPad.

Apple sold more than 11 million iPads last quarter. RIM said last month it would no longer produce the cheapest model of the PlayBook, which uses the same QNX-based operating system that the company is struggling to integrate into its future phones.

SIA WINNING RETAILER OF THE YEAR: TROLLHAUGEN SKI SHOP

Trollhaugen Ski Shop in Dresser, WI was awarded the 2011 SIA SnowSports North Central Retailer of the Year Award for their contribution and commitment to the growth of the snow sports industry. Owned and operated by the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Rochford family, Trollhaugen Winter Recreation area has been an icon of the Midwest snow sports scene since 1950. John Wright, buyer at Trollhaugen Ski Shop, took some time out to give us some insight on how to be a winning retailer and the challenges he has faces.

SIA: How did you get started in the industry?
JW: I knew from the first time that I skied that this would be how I would spend the rest of my life. My first job was teaching skiing at a small area in Houlton, Wisconsin called 8 Flags over Birch Park. I was 16 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven. From there, I worked in retail, moved on to being a manufacturer?s rep, and finally back to retail. To quote Max Marolt, ?It?s been a great ride.?

SIA: Tell us about one of your top retail success stories?
JW: Without question, our greatest challenge and our greatest success was battling our way back from the fire in 2008. The shop was destroyed by a devastating blaze that May. It took the entire summer to settle with the insurance company, and all fall to rebuild. We finally reopened on Christmas Eve 2008 with accessories only. The following season we came back full force with clothing, equipment and accessories. We are the only full service, full line ski shop at a ski area in this part of the country. Something we are all very proud of.

SIA: Words of Wisdom?
JW: If I were to speak with someone just getting started in the industry, I would try to impress upon them the value of following and never losing their passion for the sport. Too often the day to day grind gets in the way of continued participation in the sport we loved so much that we chose to make it our career.

If I can think of one negative that I have observed during my tenure in the industry, it would have to be that many of the principals in the business are no longer participants in the sport. Too many creative decisions are made by non-skiers or boarders. And to this fact I believe we have taken a giant step backwards.

Flat consumer spending weakest in 6 months

By Lucia Mutikani, Reuters

WASHINGTON - U.S. consumer spending was flat in May for the first time in six months as demand for motor vehicles waned, but weak inflation pressures should ease the burden on cash-strapped households.

The Commerce Department said on Friday April's consumer spending was revised down to show only a 0.1 percent rise instead of the previously reported 0.3 percent gain.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, was also held back by weak sales at service stations as the pump price of gasoline fell from lofty levels early in the year.

"We're seeing consumer spending come off the boil a bit over the last few months. That's to be expected, given uncertainty across the board and the troubling headlines we've seen," said Omer Esiner, chief analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington.

U.S. stock index futures held onto sharp gains after the data, while Treasury debt prices maintained earlier losses. The dollar held onto losses versus the euro.

Spending rose 0.1 percent after adjustment for inflation. The small rise could cause economists to tweak their second-quarter forecasts for real consumer spending - currently in a range of 2 percent to 2.3 percent.

Spending grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the first quarter, with the overall economy expanding at a modest 1.9 percent rate.

Weak gasoline prices put downward pressure on inflation last month. A price index for personal spending fell 0.2 percent in May, the first decline in a year. The index was flat in April.

In the 12 months through May, the PCE index was up 1.5 percent, the smallest increase since January last year. It increased 1.9 percent in April.

CNBC's Rick Santelli reports monthly data on personal income and consumer prices.

A core measure that strips out food and energy costs advanced 0.1 percent last month after rising by the same margin in April. In the 12 months through May, the core PCE rose 1.8 percent, slowing from 2.0 percent the prior month.

Last month, spending on long lasting goods, like autos, fell 0.4 percent after dipping 0.2 percent in April. Auto sales had been boosted by pent-up demand after last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan left showrooms bereft of popular models.

Automakers reported unit sales declined in May.

Spending on nondurable goods fell 0.8 percent, with services advancing 0.3 percent.

Weak income growth as the economy struggles to generate enough jobs to cut into high unemployment is also curbing spending. Income rose 0.2 percent after a similar gain in April. The increase was in line with economists' expectations.

The amount of income available to households after accounting for taxes and inflation, rose 0.3 percent. That followed a 0.1 percent gain in April.

With spending less than income, the saving rate rose to 3.9 percent from 3.7 percent the prior month.

LEGION BASEBALL: Anastasio lifts East Haven past Shelton

Shore Line Sports Writer

EAST HAVEN ? East Haven got an enormous lift from their ace pitcher Michael Anastasio in a 5-0 win over Shelton last Sunday at East Haven High School.

Anastasio allowed just three hits while striking out six. He also went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI single.

''We came out and played as a team,'' said Anastasio. ''We hit the ball, had timely hitting, and we played good defense. My velocity was up today, and my curve ball and change-up looked good. I tried to mix it up all day to keep them off-balance. It was a good effort.''

Kyle Lockery paced East Haven?s offensive attack by going 2-for-2 with a single, double, and two RBIs.

The 89ers' loaded the bases in the first inning as Gary Flowers and Zack Korwek worked the count in their favor to earn walks, while Nick Lamberti and Andrew Hinckley scored for a quick 2-0 lead.

Lamberti went 2-for-3 with a single, double, a stolen base and two runs scored in this Zone II contest.

''Nick is a spark plug,? said East Haven coach Joe Pelliccia.

Shelton had a few golden opportunities to capitalize with runners in scoring position, but Anastasio?s pitching prowess and the Easties? defense prevailed in big spots.

''We have a lot of confidence and if you get pitching, it?s the name of the game,'' Pelliccia added. Continued...

Mike Ferro went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles for Shelton (4-3).

?We had some pretty good swings on the ball, and drove some balls very well,? said Shelton coach Fred Kelley. ?Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.?

Anastasio's counterpart, Jeremy Soderholm, walked two and struck out four.

''I thought Jeremy's change-up was very effective,? Kelly added. ?His change-up had a lot of bite in it, and kept them off balance to get some good hitters out. East Haven swings the bats very well. I was impressed with their hitting.?

The 89ers improved to 4-3.

''Hopefully, we start to get on a roll, and get on a winning streak and go from there,? Pelliccia said. ?I would like to see a little more hits with runners on base.?

Gazzetta sorry over Balotelli King Kong cartoon

Italy's soccer player Balotelli attend a training session during the Euro 2012 in Krakow

By Mark Meadows

updated 7:44 a.m. ET June 27, 2012

KRAKOW (Reuters) - Top Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has apologized for printing a cartoon portraying black Italy striker Mario Balotelli as King Kong.

Media reports said Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola had reacted with fury at the depiction, which comes after the 21-year-old has battled racism in his homeland and abroad for years.

The cartoon of the Manchester City forward on top of London's Big Ben swatting away footballs was meant to be humorous and positive, showing the striker as a giant who had conquered England.

However, in the wake of Italy's Euro 2012 quarter-final win over England and ahead of their semi-final with Germany on Thursday, the cartoon has received complaints from readers.

"We can honestly say it is not one of the best efforts by our great cartoonist," Gazzetta said.

"If someone found it offensive we are sorry.

"This newspaper has always fought against racism in stadiums and denounced monkey noises aimed at Balotelli."

Neither Balotteli nor Italy were immediately available to comment.

The cartoon was printed on Sunday and at first went largely unnoticed but has now become a hot topic across the internet.

Balotelli, born in Italy and of Ghanaian descent, was racially abused by Juventus fans during his time with Inter Milan and the Turin club was forced by Serie A to play a match behind closed doors.

However, racism campaigners in Italy have long believed not enough was done to protect him in a country not as used to immigration as other major European nations like the Britain and France.

At Euro 2012 Balotelli was subjected to racist abuse by Croatia fans during a match on June 14 and the Croatian FA was fined 80,000 euros ($99,800) by European governing body UEFA.

The size of the fine was criticized by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, who told Reuters there was public concern that Denmark's Nicklas Bendtner was fined 20,000 euros more for exposing an illegal advert on his underpants.

Spain have also been charged over the racist behavior of fans.

Before the tournament Balotelli said he would "kill" anyone who threw a banana at him in the street and indicated he would walk off the pitch if he heard racist chanting.

Balotelli and the Italy camp did not hear the abuse in the Croatia or Spain match. ($1 = 0.8019 euros)

Bright young people drop out of school | Edge ADHD Coaching

About 7,000 students in the U.S. become high school dropouts every school day. That?s 1.2 million students who will not graduate from high school ? each year.

It?s easy for important information to get lost in today?s never-ending flow.? But Edge Foundation founder, Neil Peterson, worries about the bright young people who are being lost because not enough of them are getting the help they need.

That?s why we continue to make innovations to find ways to empower more students with ADHD. The Puget Sound School-Based Coaching Program is one step to reaching previously underserved students within a school-based setting.

This one-of-a-kind intervention brings coaching into schools with a high proportion of at-risk students. Giaudrone Middle School in Tacoma (Tacoma Public Schools) and the Big Picture School in Burien (Highline Public Schools) are the two schools participating in the pilot program which is offered at no cost to these at risk students.

Students who are at-risk of dropping out can fall into a downward spiral; coaching can change that. Just read the words of one of the students who received coaching this year:

?My attendance was bad, so we made up this thing where I would text my coach when I came to school. ?And, so, I?ve been texting her, letting her know. It gave me this push to start improving. ?While I was improving on one priority; it makes all the other priorities better too. ?You see, all of these goals kinda come down to my self-image? they reflect how I feel about myself. My coach didn?t give me answers. ?She made me ask questions. ?She made me get my own answers.? ? Alicia B.

We are currently raising money to extend this program for another year and we need your help.? All funds raised this summer will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Johnson Scholarship Fund (JFS).

Edge is also measuring progress against its goals for participating students to refine the program and make it duplicable in other schools. Our goal is to see:

  • significant improvements in learning and study skills, will to learn, and self-regulation and
  • significant improvement in the areas of self regulation, including discipline, classroom behavior, attendance, homework completion, credits earned, progress toward high school graduation, and preparation being accepted to college.

In the end we hope to have developed a promising and replicable school-based model for ensuring the success of middle and high school students with ADHD or severe executive functioning challenges.

We value every contribution. When each of us gives a small amount, we can do great work together.

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung

Judge Koh enjoins sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on SamsungThought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Tips On Effectively Filing For Bankruptcy - Financial

Making the decision to file for bankruptcy isn?t an easy one, but sometimes it can be the only way out of a mountain of debt. It?s best to make the decision of filing for personal bankruptcy after doing a little research and gaining a clear understanding of the topic. Read the below article for excellent advice from people who have personally went through bankruptcy.

After you have finished with the initial process of filing, you can relax and take a breather. A lot of debtors usually get stressed when they file. That stress could lead to complete depression, if you do not take the necessary steps to fight it. After you have finished filing for personal bankruptcy, your life will improve.

Speak with an attorney about any fears you have about losing your car. You may even be able to get your monthly payment reduced. Filing under Chapter 7 is usually a good way to lower your payments. In order for this to succeed, you must have bought your car in excess of 910 days before filing, have a higher interest loan for it as well as a consistent work history.

When filing for bankruptcy, be sure you know what your lawyer is doing at all times. It is important to know the status of your case and you should not be hesitant to ask questions. Law offices can be busy places. They can make mistakes. No matter what people say, lawyers are human too!

Before filing personal bankruptcy, consider other options. Credit counseling is one option you should consider. You can get assistance from non-profit companies. Their job is to lower your payments and interest through negotiations with your creditors. You pay them and then they pay the creditors.

It is important to make sure all the information contained in your filing is complete and accurate. Even though you may have an attorney to fill out and file paperwork, it is your responsibility to ensure all information is accurate. Although bankruptcy attorneys have legal expertise, they also have plenty of cases to deal with. It is definitely not impossible for them to make mistakes. Due to this fact you need to be sure that all of your details were documented properly before the case is over.

Before you file, you have to quickly think to be more responsible fiscally. The period before your filing is not the time to run up additional debts. Judges may take into account your current credit history, in addition to your past credit history, when considering your bankruptcy case. You should demonstrate through your current behavior that you are actively changing your personal financial habits.

It?s a good idea to meet with a number of bankruptcy lawyers before settling upon one. The majority of them offer free initial consultations. It is important to meet with the actual attorney, not the attorney?s assistant or paralegal; those people are not permitted to give legal advice Considering several different lawyers can help find someone to trust.

Before you choose Chapter 7 bankruptcy, think about what effect that is going to have on any co-signers you have, which are usually close relatives and friends. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy will relieve you of your legal responsibility to pay any joint debts. Creditors, however, will hold the co-signer liable for the entire balance of the debt.

Do not delay in filing your personal bankruptcy case. There is no sense waiting to file bankruptcy if that is the only option you have left. Waiting to file may increase your stress levels and give creditors a chance to repossess items your would otherwise be allowed to retain. Delaying your petition could have serious negative long-term consequences. It is best to file as quick as possible.

Some attorneys have a free phone service where creditors can be referred when they try to contact you in regards to a delinquent account. By contacting the phone number that you supply, your creditors can get confirmation that a bankruptcy filing incorporating their debt is underway. That will help you avoid them in the future.

Although personal bankruptcy is always an option, do not pursue this before looking into other avenues. Keep in mind that services that promise debt consolidation are usually scams that make your financial problems worse. Keep the tips here in mind as you navigate through your financial challenges, and prepare yourself for a more successful financial future.

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

While it's true a few lucky AT&T Galaxy S II owners were able to get their hands on the official upgrade to Android 4.0 just a matter of days ago, the company wasn't ready to push it out to the masses quite just yet. The initial tests must've gone as well as hoped, however, because AT&T is now ready to make ICS publicly available to anyone willing to go through Kies to grab it. Indeed, the one drawback to this wonderful news is the fact that ICS doesn't just come to you... you need to go to it. As in, no over-the-air capabilities. The silver lining to that, though, is that this may actually work out better for anyone that feels better off sticking with the tried-and-true Gingerbread TouchWiz experience. On a sidenote, AT&T also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the next version of Android to more devices this summer, but refused to specify which ones we can look forward to. Head below (or check out the source link) to learn how to grab the update.

NBA star?s gay slur shows pros don?t know Twitter

By Bob Sullivan

All winter long, New York Knicks star player Amar?e Stoudemire plays in front of packed basketball arenas. Often, when on the road, he must stand on the foul line and hit critical shots while ignoring taunts screamed at him by 20,000 or more enemy fans.?

So why couldn't he ignore one comparatively tame tweet from a Knicks fan critical of his play?

Stoudemire is the latest professional athlete to land in social media hot water after he replied privately on Twitter this weekend to the fan. In just 140 characters, he managed to squeeze in two words we won't publish on msnbc.com, including one hateful gay slur: ?"F#&# you.? I don't have to do anything, F#@."

The recipient took a screen capture of the private direct message and posted it publicly. Within hours, a typical Internet firestorm ensued. The NBA now says it is investigating.

The fan, who identifies himself as 19 years old on his Twitter account, loves the Knicks so much he uses the team logo as his background image. But he's not innocent.? He taunted Stoudemire, who he says is one of his favorite players, by urging him to "come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season" -- nothing wrong there -- but closed the note like this: "mannnnnn deadasss!!!"

While no one wants to be in the business of ranking foul language, clearly Stoudemire upped the ante with his response.? Literally and figuratively, Stoudemire should have been the bigger man.

The fan has declined interviews, saying, "I don't want to make this situation any bigger than it is," a mature response that Stoudemire could easily have employed this weekend.

It's time professional athletes realized that social media is a lot bigger than they think it is.

Stoudemire's Twitter transgression is hardly the first, and it won't be the last.? It is, however, shocking that an athlete being paid more than $20 million annually could be thrown off his game so easily.? And it's almost unbelievable that professional sports teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars crafting their image leave so much to chance on Twitter and Facebook.

It's not as if the sports leagues can't control social media usage -- the National Basketball Association prohibits players from Tweeting 45 minutes before games, during games, and after games until media leave the locker room. Other leagues have similar restrictions.?

Still, Twitter regret is a fixture in the sports world. Then Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined last season for complaining about umpires on Twitter. Several NFL players were criticized for saying they were enjoying the NFL lockout last summer. And NBA pariah Gilbert Arenas was fined after he tweeted that he would be "direct sexting in no time" last year.

Stoudemire's direct response to a fan raised the stakes however. ?His casual use of a gay slur also shows just how far the NBA has to go to make its environment accepting of all sexual orientations.? The NBA might look to the NHL for inspiration; last year, the hockey league joined the impressive "You Can Play" initiative after a team general manager's son became the first openly gay player in the minor leagues.? The player, Brendan Burke, died in a car crash in 2010.

In addition to the offensive language, it's amazing that some athletes fail to prepare for the reputation risk which comes from social media, and that professional leagues haven't managed to control it. The contrast with college sports here is stark; across the country, many colleges are trying to ban athletes from using social media, or hiring technology companies to monitor them closely.?

This approach has raised serious First Amendment issues, but it at least shows the schools are taking the risks seriously.

There is a distinct difference, however, when a professional sports team pays an athlete millions of dollars as part of a profit-making venture. Schools shouldn?t force teenage lacrosse players off Facebook, and they probably don?t have the right to such a free speech restriction, but a pro team can surely control how its highly compensated employee interacts with the public. ?

The Twitter regret issue should be interesting to watch during the upcoming London Olympic games, where a combination of highly paid professionals and amateurs, along with very excited family members, might lead to some embarrassing social media moments. Already, famous British swimmer and former silver medalist Sharron Davies is calling for a Twitter blackout by U.K. athletes during the games.

?It?s always something that is a bit of a risk, that some silly story would overshadow the good stuff we were doing,? Davies told the Mirror. ?For that short period, a month, let?s not take a risk.?

For his part, Stoudemire did apologize, seemingly without prompting, several hours later.

"I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again," he wrote in another private message posted by the recipient.

Stoudemire had a frustrating, injury-riddled season that ended with him embarrassingly punching a glass door after a playoff loss to eventual league champion Miami Heat. Angry punches and glass don't mix well. The resulting injury caused Stoudemire to miss a playoff game and limited him for the rest of the series.

Frustration and the instant gratification of social media are an even more toxic mixture. If someone paid me $20 million a year, I'd pay for 24/7 public relations help with my Twitter account.? Seems a sensible way to keep the fouls on the court.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court threw out key provisions of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants Monday but said a much-debated portion could go forward ? that police must check the status of people stopped for various reasons who might appear to be in the U.S. illegally.

The court upheld the "show me your papers" requirement, but even there the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges. And they removed some teeth by prohibiting officers from arresting people on immigration charges.

The Obama administration had assailed the Arizona law as an unconstitutional intrusion into an area under Washington's control, and the court struck down provisions that would have made state crimes out of federal immigration violations.

But several lawmakers and civil rights groups said the part of the law left in place by the high court was an invitation to racial profiling.

The court announced that Thursday would be the last day of rulings this term, which means the decision on President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul probably will come that day.

The Arizona decision landed in the middle of a presidential campaign in which Obama has been heavily courting Latino voters and Republican challenger Mitt Romney has been struggling to win Latino support. During a drawn-out primary campaign, Romney and the other GOP candidates mostly embraced a hard line on illegal immigrants, though Romney has lately taken a softer tone.

Obama said he was pleased that the court struck down key parts of Arizona's law but concerned about what the high court left intact.

"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," the president said in a written statement. He said police in Arizona should not enforce the provision in a way that undermines civil rights.

"What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform," Obama said.

Romney did not immediately comment on the court decision Monday, but he said, "I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities."

In Monday's decision, the court was unanimous on allowing the immigration status check to go forward. The justices were divided on striking down the other portions.

Justice Anthony Kennedy said the law could ? and suggested it should ? be read to avoid concerns that status checks could lead to prolonged detention.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said the ruling marked a victory for people who believe in the responsibility of states to defend their residents. The case, she said, "has always been about our support for the rule of law. That means every law, including those against both illegal immigration and racial profiling. Law enforcement will be held accountable should this statute be misused in a fashion that violates an individual's civil rights."

Civil rights groups that separately challenged the law over concerns that it would lead to rights abuses said their lawsuit would go on.

Even with the limitations the high court put on Arizona, the immigration status check still is "an invitation to racial profiling," said American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Omar Jadwat.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.

Five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also are on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor joined all of Kennedy's opinion.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas would have allowed all the challenged provisions to take effect. Justice Samuel Alito would have allowed police to arrest undocumented immigrants who seek work, and also make arrests without warrants.

Scalia, in comments from the bench, caustically described Obama's recently announced plans to ease deportation rules for some children of illegal immigrants.

"The president said at a news conference that the new program is 'the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the administration's proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind," Scalia said.

The Arizona case focused on whether states can adopt their own measures to deal with an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the face of federal inaction on comprehensive reform, or whether the federal government has almost exclusive authority in that area.

Kennedy wrote obliquely about the impasse at the national level.

"Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the state may not pursue policies that undermine federal law," Kennedy said.

Justice Elena Kagan sat out the case because of her work in the Obama administration.

The case is Arizona v. U.S., 11-182.

Toshiba Excite 13 review a bigscreened tablet with a price to match

Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn't necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for.

There's no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate -- "slab" seems appropriate here -- so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there's a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions.

Exome sequencing gives cheaper, faster diagnosis in heterogeneous disease, study shows

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The first report of the diagnostic use of the technique of exome sequencing, where short sequences of DNA are analysed, shows that it can give good results at low cost, a researcher from The Netherlands will tell the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics June 25. The scientists were able to perform a genetic diagnosis in around 20% of 100 cases of patients with intellectual disability (ID) and 50% of the 25 cases of blindness studied. Not only is the exome test cheaper, but results are available more quickly than with Sanger sequencing[1], they say.

Dr. Marcel Nelen, head of the Core Genome Analysis Laboratory of the Genetics Department at Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, will describe to delegates how he and colleagues at the University examined exome sequences from 262 patients with six heterogeneous diseases: ID, blindness, deafness, movement disorders, cancer, and OXPHOS diseases[2]. In all, the researchers analysed about 500 exome sequences. In the ID cases, exomes from the father, mother and the child were analysed; in all the other diseases, the exome data from the patient alone was filtered for known causative disease genes.

"The chances of finding a causal mutation in a single gene is small," says Dr. Nelen, "but in a package containing more than 100 genes it is high, as our results from the blindness patients show. This new strategy means that we can analyse up to 20,000 genes with a single generic test, and the high throughput and lower cost means that we can test more for less money. But before we implemented the test more widely in our laboratory we needed to be sure that it would give us reliable diagnostic results."

Exons are short sequences of DNA representing the regions in genes that are translated into protein. The human genome contains about 180,000 exons, constituting about 1% of the total genome. While exome sequencing is only able to identify those conditions where protein function is affected, scientists believe that the exon regions contain about 85% of all disease-causing mutations. And while Sanger sequencing looks at around 500 base pairs per analysis, the new gene sequencing technologies (next generation sequencing or NGS) look at millions of sequencing reactions per analysis.

The Dutch researchers were entering new territory and so needed to write the rulebook themselves. "There were no best practice guidelines available for exome sequencing, and so we had to create diagnostic workflows, procedures and criteria. What criteria did we have to set before we could authorise the outcome? What type of informed consent was necessary? How could we organise confirmation of our results? All these questions had to be answered, and we undertook numerous discussions with clinical geneticists, researchers and ethicists before we could get started," Dr. Nelen says.

The results then needed to be confirmed. "We validated our results by using Sanger sequencing, the standard method of genetic diagnosis which has a very high sensitivity and specificity," Dr. Nelen will say. In addition to ID and blindness, confirmed diagnostic results in the other diseases analysed to date were impressive. In deafness disease-causing mutations were found in about 20% of cases, in movement disorders between 15 -- 20%, and in OXPHOS diseases causal mutations were found in about 25% of the patients studied.

"Although it is often not possible to treat their diseases, we should take into account that most of these patients will have had a long and worrying journey through different doctors and hospitals before they are diagnosed," says Dr. Nelen. "Exome sequencing can shorten that route, and it can also simplify the work of clinicians because they don't have to make a decision about which gene to test for -- with 100 or more genes per disease, that can be a very difficult decision to make. Exome sequencing tests for all the causative gene mutations at the same time, and that means that fast and accurate diagnoses can be made. Even if there is no treatment available, such diagnoses can help parents, patients and clinicians to make well-informed decisions on treatment and care, as well as being able to plan for the future."

A further advantage of the technique is its flexibility. If a new, clinically relevant gene is discovered, it can be added to the testing list and the data reanalysed if necessary. There are limits as to what exome sequencing can do, the researchers say, but these technical difficulties will diminish as the technique matures and evolves, and for now the fact that so many patients that can benefit from the technique, as opposed to time-consuming and costly Sanger sequencing strategies, easily outweighs these disadvantages.

"We need to be able to reduce the price of the exome test yet further before we can offer it more widely," Dr. Nelen will conclude. "In the future I am sure that genome sequencing will become cheaper, and this is really the gold standard; it provides a single test that detects all possible pathogenic genetic variation, whereas exome sequencing still misses mutations due to its more limited nature. But with whole genome sequencing currently costing on average ?10 000 and an exome test between 10 and 20 times less we can see significant cost savings, and the less complex nature of the test means that diagnostic results can be available much more quickly. Genetic diagnosis is becoming more and more important in the clinic and we believe that, as it develops, the exome technique will be one of the first tests to be considered by a doctor where a genetic disease is suspected. "

Notes

[1] In Sanger sequencing, a single DNA fragment of about 500 base pairs, synthesised with polymerase chain reaction, is used as a template to generate a set of fragments that differ in length from each other by a single base. The fragments are then separated by size, and the bases at the end are identified, recreating the original sequence of the DNA fragment.

[2]OXPHOS diseases are those where oxidative phosphorylation is disturbed. Oxidative phosphorylation is a metabolic pathway that produces ATP, the molecule that supplies energy to metabolism. The manifestations of OXPHOS disease are very complex and can affect a variety of tissues or systems

Despite the opinion of some real estate professionals, however, many investors remain on the fence. While each investor must carefully consider their own financial objectives and risk tolerance before jumping back into the market, we?ve listed a few reasons investors should consider in assessing today?s real estate purchase opportunities:

A great knowledge base for commercial property investors is the following link:

1031 Exchange Opportunities

Investors with low basis properties may utilize Internal Revenue Code a 1031 to defer tax on the sale of one underperforming asset to acquire one or more discounted replacement properties that may enhance cash flow and provide higher long term investment returns.

Attractive Purchase Prices

Many distressed sellers (and some banks) are selling investment properties at deep discounts and accepting offers that are below current replacement costs. Recent reports indicate that lenders are selling foreclosed properties (often referred to as a eal estate owned? or ?REO? property) at an average discount of 28% below prices being paid for comparable non-distressed properties in the same market.

Historically Low Financing Costs

The Fed?s stimulus efforts, such as QE2 (?Quantitative Easing 2?), have resulted in historically low interest rates, making the cost of debt service exceptionally attractive. Qualified real estate investors can take advantage of today?s low interest rates to bolster cash flow and lock in better long-term investment returns.

Inflation Hedge

With many economists predicting that inflation will increase at some point in the future, hard assets, like investment real estate, can provide a hedge against the declining value of money in an inflationary environment. Additionally, ownership of leased real estate can provide an investor with increased income as rent rates also tend to rise in inflationary periods.

Yield

Financial institutions are paying very low yields on money market accounts and other conservative investments. In contrast, many investment properties are generating returns in the 7-9% range, providing considerably better yields than many other competing investments.

Less Competition

Foreign ownership of U.S. investment real estate is increasing. Foreign investors see U.S. real estate as a solid investment in a stable economy, and the lower value of the dollar has made U.S. real estate an even more attractive bargain. These two trends will increase demand, which will drive up prices on certain types of investment property. By buying now, investors can stay ahead of the competition.

Desirable Product Classes

Some classes of investment property are experiencing considerably more demand than supply. For example, in the multi-family segment, demand for rentals has increased as foreclosures have mounted and there is little new multi-family construction in the pipeline to meet such increased demand. As a result, multi-family rents are increasing and many experts project this trend to accelerate.

Worst Price Declines are Over

Property values nationally have declined by 30% or more since the market peak in 2006. Many economists believe we are at an important pivot point where prices will stabilize and begin to increase (albeit at lower appreciation rates than in the past). If investors wait too long, they may find they are facing competing bids and higher prices to close. Buying before demand picks up in the nearly inevitable recovery locks in today?s bargain prices.
