MIAMI (AP) ? Trayvon Martin's parents made appearances on network morning shows Thursday, saying they are still shocked that jurors acquitted George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of their 17-year-old son.

On NBC's "Today" show, Sybrina Fulton questioned whether jurors looked at the shooting from her son's point of view.

"He was a teenager. He was scared. He did run," Fulton said, who added that she believes the justice system failed her son.

"We didn't get the verdict we wanted because we wanted him to be (held) accountable."

Martin's father, Tracy Martin, expressed disbelief in the verdict handed down Saturday by a six-woman jury following a three-week trial in central Florida.

"We felt in our hearts that we were going to get a conviction," Martin said. "We felt that the killer of our unarmed child was going to be convicted of the crime he committed."

On ABC's "Good Morning America," Tracy Martin said he felt the jury did not get a chance to get to know the teen. "They didn't know him as a human being," he said.

Martin's parents said they still believe Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, racially profiled their son.

"Obviously, any time you have a person that makes an assumption that a person is up to no good, that's some kind of profiling," Martin said. "Was he racially profiled? I think if Trayvon had been white, this never would have happened."

Martin's parents said they support the federal government looking into the case. The Justice Department announced Sunday it plans to review the case to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted.

Zimmerman, who was charged with second-degree murder, claimed he shot Martin in self-defense.

Martin's mother said she believes the verdict sends a "terrible message to other little black and brown boys."

"They can't walk fast. They can't walk slow. So what do they do? How do they get home without people assuming you are doing something wrong?," Fulton said.

Fulton told "CBS This Morning" her son was not a burglar.

"He simply went to the store and was headed back home," she said. "And for somebody to look at him and perceive that he was a burglar, that was the problem that initiated everything."

The parents' attorney, Benjamin Crump, didn't rule out a civil lawsuit against Zimmerman in response to a question from CBS's Charlie Rose.

"We'll look at all legal options. Right now, we'll ask the Department of Justice to answer ... 'Can a private citizen with a gun profile and follow our children home?'" Crump said.

Analysis: Chipotle under attack by noodles and clones

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Chipotle Mexican Grill is one of the restaurant industry's hottest stocks, but fickle diners and an ever-expanding selection of entrepreneurial eateries threaten to make it harder for the upscale burrito seller to keep delivering the explosive growth investors savor.

After two decades without significant direct challenges in the "fast-casual" category, Chipotle is bumping up against a bevy of new rivals that also sell $10 meals made right before diners' eyes in the open assembly-line kitchens it popularized.

Contrary to popular belief, the biggest threat to Denver-based Chipotle may not be big, publicly traded Mexican food chains like Yum Brands Inc's Taco Bell or Jack in the Box Inc's Qdoba Mexican Grill, analysts said.

"It's all these little, new concepts that are springing up everywhere. There is a mad rush into fast-casual," Bob Goldin, an executive vice president at consulting firm Technomic, said.

"Not only do you have Chipotle clones, you have the expansion of other cuisines," said Morningstar restaurant analyst RJ Hottovy.

Some of the fastest-growing fast-casual names include established players like Chipotle "clone" Freebirds World Burrito, "better" burger seller Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and sandwich seller Jimmy John's, Technomic said.

Other new ethnic-inspired eateries specialize in everything from falafel to Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches.

Newly public Noodles & Co , a roughly 345-unit chain, dubs itself "your world kitchen" and offers dishes such as Japanese pan noodles, Wisconsin Mac & Cheese and Pad Thai.

Established in 1995 not far from Denver-based Chipotle, Noodles is led by Kevin Reddy, Chipotle's former chief operating officer, and is tempting investors with its potential for the kind of spectacular share price expansion the burrito seller boasted in its younger years.

Noodles shares now trade at around 113 times 2013 earnings estimates, versus about 35 for Chipotle, but its stock price is an easier to stomach at $43 versus $377 for Chipotle.

"If there's a long-term threat out there, it is probably something like a Noodles. It's going to force them to up their game," said ITG restaurant analyst Steve West.

To be sure, no one is predicting Chipotle's imminent demise.

The company on Thursday reported higher second-quarter profit after sales at established restaurants accelerated, boosted by more aggressive advertising, catering, menu additions and one more trading day than the year earlier.

It also is testing a new concept called ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen in Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

Even if other chains succeed in luring away some Chipotle customers, they will have a hard time matching the company's ability to contain labor costs as it cranks out more sales.

Chipotle fan and stockholder Preston Motes, 44, said he is not making any immediate bets on rival Noodles & Co.

"I've eaten at Noodles twice and it's OK. If it's Noodles & Co. versus ShopHouse, I'd probably go with ShopHouse," he said.

FASTER, BETTER, CHEAPER

Fast-casual chains like Chipotle appeal to diners by using higher quality ingredients than fast-food chains and offering meals at lower prices than limited-service "casual" restaurants such as Darden Restaurants Inc's Olive Garden.

According to Technomic, 2012 sales at fast-casual eateries jumped 13.2 percent, versus increases of 5.6 percent for fast-food chains and 2.0 percent for casual outlets.

When Chipotle's stock debuted at $22 in 2006, it had about 480 restaurants. It plans to have roughly 1,600 units by the end of this year.

Some of Chipotle's growth has come at the expense of other chains - namely rival Qdoba, which plans to close 67 restaurants, or around 10 percent of its units, this year.

Chipotle's simple, customizable menu features organic produce and antibiotic-free meats when possible. Young families, office workers and college students frequent the chain, which has quietly won over the fast-growing ranks of diners who avoid wheat and other gluten-containing foods for health reasons.

"It's a safe haven for those of us with eating restrictions," said Jenna McKay, 27, who avoids gluten due to celiac disease and visits Chipotle so often that she is the "mayor" of the outlet near her job in Sacramento on Foursquare.

Some analysts say the chain could ultimately double in size to 3,000 to 4,000 North American restaurants which would be still far less than the more than 14,000 U.S. units boasted by McDonald's Corp , which owned the company from 1998 until it went public.

But the bigger Chipotle gets and the more rivals mimic its successful model, the harder it will be to stand out.

On Thursday, the company dashed investor hopes that those sales would get an additional boost from price hikes this year.

Speaking on a conference call with analysts, executives said they were delaying price increases due to tamer overall food inflation. They also want to replace oils made from genetically modified ingredients and increase supplies of naturally-raised meats before making any such a move.

McKay said she won't stop visiting Chipotle if prices go up, but depending on the increase, "I may not get a soda or chips."

How a solar cooker works

Solar cookers use some basic principles, such as:

• Concentrating sunlight: direct sunlight is concentrated on a small cooking area, thus concentrating the energy and increasing the heat produced; this is done by a reflective surface.
• Converting light to heat: light is absorbed by a black or low-reflective surface.
• Trapping heat: covering the cooking area keeps the hot air inside; it may be possible to reach the same cooking temperatures in cold days, as well as in hot ones.
• Greenhouse effect: a glass surface lets light pass through, but keeps radiation inside the area.

How to cook in a solar cooker

To reduce cooking time, it is important to cut food into smaller pieces than you would for regular cooking. Otherwise, cooking is done basically the same way as on a regular stove or oven. The solar cooker may be elevated on a brick, metal trivet, rock, or other heat sink and placed in direct sunlight.

The cooker is turned towards the sun, and left there until the food is properly cooked. It is unnecessary to stir or turn the food over, because of even cooking and because if the cooker is opened, trapped heat can escape, thus slowing the cooking process. It is important to check if shadows from other buildings or plants are not blocking the sunlight. For longer cooking times, the cooker is turned to face the sun at its highest point during the time.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

• no fuel = no gathering or paying for firewood or other fuel; also, reduces deforestation and habitat loss
• high temperatures = ability of sterilizing and pasteurizing, as well as cooking the same as in a regular stove or oven
• no smoke
• no fire = children cannot get burned; no danger of a wildfire

Disadvantages:

• less useful in cloudy days = limited on cooking in clear days
• longer cooking time
• special cooking techniques required
• some designs affected by strong wind

I personally wonder how tasty food may be when cooked in such a solar cooker?And wonder who has had such an experience already.

FAIRHAVEN ? The "Needy Family Fund" box at St. Mary's Church was robbed Tuesday by men police identify as Justin Lucas and Brandon Dubois, both of Fall River, according to a police press release.

After responding to a 12:45 p.m. alarm at the church, police found the damaged depository and began canvassing the neighborhood.

Witnesses tipped them off to two men in a black Volkswagen Jetta, who had reportedly walked from the car toward the church and returned a short time later, the press release said.

Fairhaven police broadcast a description before Acushnet police stopped the car on Main Street. They arrested Lucas, 24, of 127 Mulberry St., second floor, and Dubois, 24, of 44 Hood St., finding burglar's instruments and clothing matching the description given by a witness, as well as $300 cash.

Dubois and Lucas are being charged with larceny from a building, breaking and entering into a depository, possession of burglarious instruments and vandalism. Dubois was also charged with possession of a Class E substance after police found three Xanax tablets in his possession.

Mattel profit slumps as Barbie's appeal fades

(Reuters) - Mattel Inc , the world's largest toymaker, reported a 23 percent fall in quarterly profit as its iconic Barbie brand struggled to attract buyers.

The company, also home to brands such as Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price, said second-quarter net income fell to $73.3 million, or 21 cents per share, from $96.2 million, or 28 cents per share, a year earlier.

Sales rose 1 percent to $1.17 billion.

Bank of Canada holds rates steady

• Rates on hold as long as economy has significant slack, inflation outlook is muted, household imbalances resolve constructively
• Boosts GDP view to 1.8% in 2013 from 1.5% in April

The Bank of Canada today announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 1/4 per cent and the deposit rate is 3/4 per cent.

Global economic growth remains modest, although the pace of economic activity varies significantly across the major economies. The U.S. economic expansion is proceeding at a moderate pace, with the continued strengthening in private demand being partly offset by the impact of fiscal consolidation. In Japan, fiscal and monetary policy stimulus is contributing to a rapid recovery in economic growth. In contrast, economic activity in the euro area remains weak. While stronger than in the advanced economies, real GDP growth in China and other emerging market economies has slowed, exerting downward pressure on global commodity prices and, as a consequence, the Bank has downgraded slightly its global growth forecast. The global economy is still expected to pick up in 2014 and 2015.

In Canada, economic growth is expected to be choppy in the near term, owing to unusual temporary factors, although the overall outlook is little changed from the Bank?s projection in its April Monetary Policy Report (MPR). Annual GDP growth is projected to average 1.8 per cent in 2013 and 2.7 per cent in both 2014 and 2015, supported by very accommodative financial conditions. Despite ongoing competitiveness challenges, exports are projected to gather momentum, which should boost confidence and lead to increasingly solid growth in business investment. The economy will also be supported by continued growth in consumer spending, while further modest declines in residential investment are expected. Growth in real GDP is projected to be sufficient to absorb the current material excess capacity in the economy, closing the output gap around mid-2015, as projected in the April MPR.

Inflation has been low in recent months and is expected to remain subdued in the near term. The weakness in core inflation reflects persistent material excess capacity, heightened competitive pressures on retailers, relatively subdued wage increases, and some temporary sector-specific factors. Total CPI inflation has also been restrained by declining mortgage interest costs. As the economy gradually returns to full capacity and with inflation expectations well-anchored, both core and total CPI inflation are expected to return to 2 per cent around mid-2015.

Against this backdrop, the Bank has decided to maintain the target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. ?As long as there is significant slack in the Canadian economy, the inflation outlook remains muted, and imbalances in the household sector continue to evolve constructively, the considerable monetary policy stimulus currently in place will remain appropriate. Over time, as the normalization of these conditions unfolds, a gradual normalization of policy interest rates can also be expected, consistent with achieving the 2 per cent inflation target.
