China takes islands dispute with Japan to pages of U.S. newspapers

(Reuters) - With world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, China has taken its dispute with Japan over the ownership of a chain of islands to the ad pages of major American newspapers.

China Daily, an organ of the Communist Party and the country's official English-language daily newspaper, took out full-page-spread advertisements on Friday in the New York Times and the Washington Post.

The ad's headline asserts "Diaoyu Islands Belong to China" over a color picture of the string of islands in the East China Sea. It says the islands "have been an inherent territory of China since ancient times."

Ownership of the islands has become a major flashpoint in deteriorating Sino-Japanese relations. The potentially gas-rich uninhabited islets, administered by Japan for years, have been claimed by China and Taiwan, where they are known as Diaoyu and Tiaoyutai, respectively.

The festering dispute figured prominently at the General Assembly this week as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged China and Japan on Thursday to let "cooler heads" prevail.

In September, Japan brought the chain - known to the Japanese as the Senkaku Islands - under state control through a "purchase" from a private owner.

A spokesperson for the Japanese consulate in New York defended Japan's ownership of the islands but would not comment on the Chinese ads.

US Immigration to Treat Same-Sex Partners as - The Church Report

The Obama administration has directed immigration officials to recognize same-sex partners as family members in deportation cases, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Friday.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Pelosi in a letter that she had ordered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to notify its field offices "that the interpretation of the phrase ?family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners."

Pelosi welcomed the federal recognition of gay and lesbian couples. At the same time, she called for more to be done to protect undocumented immigrants in long-term relationships with American citizens.

Napolitano's directive "will provide a measure of clarity and confidence to families dealing with separation in immigration cases," Pelosi said in a written statement. "Our nation is served when loving families are kept together."

But she added: "We need to ... relegate DOMA to the dustbin of history." The 1996 Defense of Marriage Act bars the federal government from extending federal benefits, such as Social Security, to married gay and lesbian couples.

DOMA restricts the Obama administration from outright ordering that gay and lesbian couples be treated the same as heterosexual couples.

Last year, Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama called DOMA unconstitutional and said they would no longer defend the measure in court. In response, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives stepped in to fund an effort to try to uphold the law.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide next month whether it will review a number of cases questioning the constitutionality of DOMA.

Meanwhile, married couples like Brian Willingham, 38, and Alfonso Garcia, 35, of Orinda, California, have been fighting for the right to be considered related in the eyes of immigration authorities. After a traffic stop, officials began deportation proceedings against Garcia, who came to the United States from Mexico when he was 14.

"We're definitely happy that the Obama administration took this good first step," Willingham told Reuters Friday. "But it's just a Band-Aid. It helps us because we are faced with deportation. But it leaves thousands of couples in exile."

Immigration officials last year said they would consider same-sex partnerships as family relations in deciding whether to deport undocumented immigrants.

But 83 members of Congress led by Pelosi and Jerrold Nadler of New York criticized the government for unevenly applying the directive, and they pressed for written guidelines.

"This is a huge step forward," said Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality, a national gay-rights group. "Until now, LGBT families and their lawyers had nothing to rely on but an oral promise. The administration's written guidance will help families facing separation and the field officers who are reviewing their cases." (reuters)

U.S. answers Florida cry to end tomato pact with Mexico

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's administration took a big step on Thursday toward terminating a 16-year-old tomato trade agreement with Mexico following a request from growers in Florida, an important swing state in the presidential election.

Florida growers compete with Mexico for the U.S. winter and early spring tomato market. They have pressed the Obama administration since June to terminate the Mexico pact on grounds it fails to protect them against Mexican tomatoes sold in the United States below the cost of production.

The U.S. Commerce Department stopped short of immediately tearing up the agreement but took a preliminary position in favor of ending the pact. It said it would make a final decision "as soon as practicable" and in no longer than 270 days.

The decision surprised Mexican officials and tomato producers, who have offered to renegotiate the pact. They argue the 1996 agreement has benefited U.S. consumers and brought stability to the North American market.

An end to the agreement would clear the way for U.S. growers to seek anti-dumping duties that could lead to higher prices for Mexican tomatoes sold in the United States.

"Today's preliminary decision is welcome news to domestic growers and the workers who have suffered under an outdated and failed agreement governing trade in fresh tomatoes with Mexico," Reggie Brown, executive director of the Florida Tomato Exchange, said in a statement.

Mexican growers export about $1.9 billion worth of tomatoes to the United States. They say Florida producers have failed to keep pace with technology changes that have produced a tastier Mexican tomato and propelled sales in the United States.

Many U.S. agricultural and business groups weighed in favor of keeping the current pact out of fears the dispute could spark a tomato trade war that would have collateral damage on other commodities.

Francisco de Rosenzweig, a senior Mexican Economy Ministry official, said Mexico's government was "very surprised" by the decision, particularly as it came one day before a long-awaited meeting between Mexican growers and the Commerce Department.

"It's very unfortunate that they issued a preliminary decision against us first before sitting down with the Mexican producers," de Rosenzweig told Reuters.

Martin Ley, a spokesman for Mexican producers, said they would put forth a "strong proposal" in the Friday meeting with U.S. officials, which they still hope will lay the foundation for a new pact.

Mexico's Economy Minister Bruno Ferrari told Reuters earlier this week it was "obvious" the Florida Tomato Exchange had timed its request to put political pressure on the White House ahead of the November 6 presidential election, he said.

Florida is one of several battleground states expected to determine the outcome of the Nov 6 election, where Obama is running against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"While we would have preferred that today's announcement would have ended the fight, the preliminary decision ratifying the domestic industry's position will help reverse the downward spiral the industry has been facing," Brown said.

The existing pact is called a "suspension agreement" because the Commerce Department suspended an anti-dumping investigation against Mexico in 1996 and negotiated a minimum price at which Mexican tomatoes can be sold in the United States.

U.S. distributors of fresh produce sided with Mexico in the dispute, calling the notice of intent to terminate the agreement a "slap in the face" to the Mexicans and noting that thousands of jobs in border states rely on the tomato importing business.

The Fresh Produce Association of America accused Washington of acting hastily on political motives and said numerous U.S. industry groups had lobbied to uphold the tomato agreement.

"Even Walmart, the biggest retailer in the world, supported keeping the tomato suspension agreement," said Lance Jungmeyer, president of the group said.

NFL picks officials for Browns-Ravens game

(AP) ? The NFL has selected veteran referee Gene Steratore to lead a seven-man crew of regular officials in calling Thursday night's game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens.

The game will be the first officiated by the regulars since they were locked out by the NFL in a contract dispute. The union and league agreed to a new deal at midnight Thursday.

The first three weeks of the season was marked by replacement officials botching a number of calls, including one that gave the Seahawks a disputed win over the Packers on Monday night.

The other officials are umpire Bill Schuster, head linesman Wayne Mackie, line judge Jeff Seeman, field judge Bob Waggoner, side judge Jimmy DeBell and back judge Greg Steed.

Steratore is in his 10th season as an NFL official.

Water on Mars: NASA scientists are 'excited'

Mars rover Curiosity found rocks on the Martian surface that are too big to be carried by wind, so researchers suppose water must have existed on Mars at one time. Over the next two years, Curiosity will continue its search for signs of ancient?microbial life on Mars.

The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on?Mars?? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of?Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day?Mars?is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

Video: Flu season unpredictable in 2012

>>> it is time to get your flu shot once again, more than 85 million doses of vaccine have already been distributed, and more is on the way. but like every year, many are skipping the shot. and nbc's doctor nancy snyderman has more.

>> reporter: hey, it was years ago that the flu took everybody by surprise across the globe. the only thing you can say about flu season is there are no guarantees. right now, a perimeter for who should get their vaccine, because they are available right now. a reminder that the flu shot is important for anyone six months or over, people at high risk with common conditions like asthma, diabetes, pregnant women and those people over the age of 65. and remember, the caregivers who take care of the people, because a lot of them do have the chronic conditions. and some people don't like needles this time of year, a reminder this is a very important one.

>> if you are afraid of needles there is an alternative?

>> yes, there is an alternative, a nasal flu mist , not available for everybody, but everybody between the ages of two to 49. but don't take the nasal spray if you are pregnant, or had a severe reaction in the past, or have a problem with eggs, then of course talk to your doctor. that can be individualized. but i want to remind everybody that even though it is a mild fall we don't know what is going to have in december. you want your antibodies to be normal. i got mine, you should get yours today.

The 5 most educated countries in the world

- Whitney Eulich,?Staff writer

Charlie Litchfield/Idaho Press-Tribune/AP/File

5. United States

Post-secondary education: 42 percent of the population
?Annual growth rate for that group: 1.3 percent

The US, the fifth most educated country in the world and the fourth most educated among OECD countries, is home to some of the most renowned institutions of higher education (see here for a list of the 2012 top universities in the world).

However, its growth rate for post-secondary education ? 1.3 percent per year ? is quite low in comparison to the OECD average of 3.7 percent, which means other countries could outpace the US in the coming years.

Although the US is one of the world leaders in higher education for people between the ages of 25 and 64, when looking at the percentage of those aged 25 to 34, it only ranks 14th globally.

Study pinpoints epigenetic function of common cancer-causing protein: It's not what science thought

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is diagnosed in about 700,000 people in the United States every year. Commonly contributing to SCC is a protein called DNp63a -- it goes abnormally high and the ability of a patient's body to kill cancer cells goes abnormally low. In many cases of SCC, it's just that simple. And science thought the function of DNp63a was simple, as well: the tumor suppressor gene p53 is responsible for recognizing and killing cancer cells, and in SCC, it's usually inactivated. It looked like high DNp63a repressed p53, made SCC.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published September 26 in the journal Genes & Development throws the accepted role of DNp63a on its ear. Though high DNp63a and low p53 activity are correlated in SCC, there's no causation -- DNp63a doesn't affect p53. Instead, DNp63a employs "epigenetics" to keep cancer cells alive.

"This is a potent oncogene whose mechanism we thought we knew. But basically in this paper we demolish the accepted model. DNp63a doesn't work through p53 -- it operates through epigenetic silencing of anti-proliferative genes," says the study's senior author, Joaquin M. Espinosa, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at CU Boulder.

Genes are blueprints that code for proteins and these proteins in turn drive most things that happen in the body, both good and bad. But between genes and their protein products is the layer of epigenetics -- genes may be expressed differently depending on the heritable, epigenetic features that turn them on and off. In the case of DNp63a, it employs a protein partner called H2A.Z, which in volume effectively buries anti-proliferative genes in silt, rendering them unable to go about their anti-cancer duties.

"Independently of p53, DNp63a is shutting down genes that stop cell division -- shutting down anti-proliferative genes so that cells can keep dividing and dividing and dividing," Espinosa says.

Now that the function of DNp63a is known, Espinosa is looking inside the chain of events for a breakable link.

"DNp63a itself isn't druggable," he says, "but the enzymes that partner with DNp63a for epigenetic silencing are."

With a mechanism in hand, Espinosa and colleagues can now explore in animal models the possible effects of breaking the DNp63a mechanism. Drug away an essential enzyme and DNp63a may lose its ability to cause cancer.

Video: Automatic building mapping could help emergency responders

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

MIT researchers have built a wearable sensor system that automatically creates a digital map of the environment through which the wearer is moving. The prototype system, described in a paper slated for the Intelligent Robots and Systems conference in Portugal next month, is envisioned as a tool to help emergency responders coordinate disaster response.

In experiments conducted on the MIT campus, a graduate student wearing the sensor system wandered the halls, and the sensors wirelessly relayed data to a laptop in a distant conference room. Observers in the conference room were able to track the student's progress on a map that sprang into being as he moved.

Connected to the array of sensors is a handheld pushbutton device that the wearer can use to annotate the map. In the prototype system, depressing the button simply designates a particular location as a point of interest. But the researchers envision that emergency responders could use a similar system to add voice or text tags to the map ? indicating, say, structural damage or a toxic spill.

"The operational scenario that was envisioned for this was a hazmat situation where people are suited up with the full suit, and they go in and explore an environment," says Maurice Fallon, a research scientist in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and lead author on the new paper. "The current approach would be to textually summarize what they had seen afterward ? 'I went into this room on the left, I saw this, I went into the next room,' and so on. We want to try to automate that."

Fallon is joined on the paper by professors John Leonard and Seth Teller, of, respectively, the departments of Mechanical Engineering and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and EECS grad students Hordur Johannsson and Jonathan Brookshire.

Shaky aim

The new work builds on previous research on systems that enable robots to map their environments. But adapting the system so that a human could wear it required a number of modifications.

One of the sensors that the system uses is a laser rangefinder, which sweeps a laser beam around a 270-degree arc and measures the time that it takes the light pulses to return. If the rangefinder is level, it can provide very accurate information about the distance of the nearest walls, but a walking human jostles it much more than a rolling robot does. Similarly, sensors in a robot's wheels can provide accurate information about its physical orientation and the distances it covers, but that's missing with humans. And as emergency workers responding to a disaster might have to move among several floors of a building, the system also has to recognize changes in altitude, so it doesn't inadvertently overlay the map of one floor with information about a different one.

So in addition to the rangefinder, the researchers also equipped their sensor platform with a cluster of accelerometers and gyroscopes, a camera, and, in one group of experiments, a barometer (changes in air pressure proved to be a surprisingly good indicator of floor transitions). The gyroscopes could infer when the rangefinder was tilted ? information the mapping algorithms could use in interpreting its readings ? and the accelerometers provided some information about the wearer's velocity and very good information about changes in altitude.

Adjudicating the data from all the other sensors is the camera. Every few meters, the camera takes a snapshot of its surroundings, and software extracts a couple of hundred visual features from the image ? particular patterns of color, or contours, or inferred three-dimensional shapes. Each batch of features is associated with a particular location on the map.

Seeing is believing

If the person wearing the sensors returns to an area that he or she has previously visited, the system's location estimate could be off: For instance, its compensation for the tilt of the rangefinder might not have been perfect, and a wall now looks several feet farther away than it did, or its inference of position from accelerometer data could be off. In such cases, a fresh snapshot and a comparison of the visual features with those already stored can help correct its location estimate.

The prototype of the sensor platform consists of a handful of devices attached to a sheet of hard plastic about the size of an iPad, which is worn on the chest like a backward backpack. The only sensor whose volume can't be reduced significantly is the rangefinder, so in principle, the whole system could be shrunk to about the size of a coffee mug.

Auslogics thus comfortably earns its second VB100 award.?

Virus Bulletin is an independent authority that is widely recognized in the industry for its unbiased tests and reviews of antivirus software. The VB100 award, first introduced in 1998, is given to antivirus solutions that are able to detect 100% of ?in the wild? viruses during both on-access and on-demand scans, while producing absolutely no false positives when checking a set of files known to be clean. Virus Bulletin recommends looking at how consistent a software company?s product is in passing the tests and obtaining the VB100 award, which, according to them, is an indicator of how well the antivirus software is supported and kept up to date. With Auslogics receiving the perfect score of 100 and getting the VB100 award a second time in a row, the company proves that their antivirus solution deserves to be in the top spots on AV comparison charts.

Auslogics Antivirus v.15 includes all of the previous version?s features, such as real-time protection to stop threats before they can do damage, active virus control to defend against newly created viruses, vulnerability scan to discover your system?s potential security holes and recommend ways to fix them, game and laptop modes to limit the use of system resources when you are gaming or when your laptop is running on battery power, privacy control to protect your sensitive data, and other features. At the same time, it includes such innovative additions as the Auto Pilot mode, which makes the program completely silent on a user?s computer, the Rescue mode letting clean up tough infections when the operating system is unable to boot, and the Browser Sandbox mode that allows isolating the internet browser to prevent online threats from spreading to the hard drive. A complete list of program features can be found at www.auslogics.com/en/software/antivirus.

?We are extremely proud and honored to receive such a prestigious award for the second time in a row,? says Anna Lind, Auslogics PR representative. ?It strengthens our commitment to ensuring the high quality of our software and gives our customers another reason to choose Auslogics products.?

And Your Poem Can Sing | The Cornell Daily Sun

She looked like a poet, sitting there in the first seat of the first row of Hollis E. Auditorium, quietly chatting to her former student, now a professor here at Cornell, and her husband as people found their seats. In her floor-length black skirt, flowing patterned blouse and, of course, pearls, Claudia Emerson was the picture of a modern Southern poet. With a very slight accent that grows in strength when she reads her work, her demeanor adds a certain charm to her poetry that would be lost on the text alone. Brought to Cornell by the Barbara & David Zalaznick Reading Series, the former poet laureate of Virginia and Pulitzer Prize winner is the first reader for the fall semester and an excellent beginning to what promises to be a stimulating season for the series. Introduced by her former student, Prof. Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon, English, to a crowd of mainly undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, Emerson maintained a presence that commanded attention behind the podium.

She began with a highly personal poem from her most recent book, Secure the Shadow, which came out in January of this year. It was inspired in part by a burning house she saw as she was returning from a writer?s conference, but also by the death of her brother from cancer. She spoke of his passing and how, ?whether [she] wanted to write about it or not, everything [she] saw became a metaphor for metastacy (sic).? The imagery in the poem was powerful, with the idea of flame destroying everything but the house?s frame so intricately tied with the journey of her brother and his disease, but even more touching than the message itself was how Emerson said it. As she briefly discussed during her reading, there is such a large difference between poems that can be read to an audience and those that we must read ourselves but, somehow, she was able to negotiate the intimacy and privacy of quietly reading the poem alone and the performance of it. Her voice, hushed and steady, with an accent subtly trickling over every word, brought the poem to life and gave it a new presence in the world. It was as if in the walls of the auditorium she breathed new life into her words.

The rest of the reading continued much in the same way, with her introducing each poem she read by sharing her inspiration with the audience. Some poems were more personal than others, and the light hearted poems gave the audience a different perspective on her as a poet. Her style hails from the Walt Whitman genre of American poetry, with long sentences, dense language and a distinctive narrative in each work read. She focuses more on the sound of words, saying that she ?puts sound and sentences before form,? which is why her poetry lends itself to the performance.

In the performance lies her strength. When she read, the room turned into a vacuum, with every rustle of paper and squeak of chair so horribly apparent that one dared not to so much breathe too loudly. There was a sense that not only was she saying something, but that something was important. She reminded the audience that poetry is not just something to be read alone, but to be shared. Poetry is an experience, much like going to a museum or seeing a musician perform. She explained the writing process to the audience, detailing the painstaking procedure of picking not just the right word in meaning, but also the right word in terms of sound, syllable and fit. It sounded less like writing and more like fitting together pieces of a blank puzzle. She reminded us that there is so much more to poetry than the finished product.

It could be argued that things are lost when a poem is read aloud, like form or personal interpretation. That is true for some poets, like Emily Dickinson or E.E. Cummings. However, for poets like Emerson, whose narrative and sound are the driving force behind the poetry, things are only gained. Emerson proved to be talented not only as a writer, but as a performer, setting the bar high for the rest of the writers in the Reading Series.

Title:? Digital Forensics Innovation: Searching A Terabyte of Data in 10 minutes

Abstract:? Most digital forensics tools follow a simple model of ?visibility, filter and report? ? the tool extracts all of the information on a subject?s disk drive, this information is filtered according to search terms, and finally a detailed report is created by a trained examiner. The problem with this model is that it cannot keep up with the growing amount of storage on desktops and in the cloud, the increasing diversity of data formats, or the growing perniciousness of malware.

This talk present a new approach that allows rapid triage of digital storage devices using random sampling, bulk data analysis, and the presence of distinct, recognizable sectors that are commonly found in user-generated documents, multimedia, and encrypted files. It shows how a 30MB piece of video hidden on a 1TB hard drive can be found in less than 10 minutes, even if the video deleted and partially overwritten so that no file headers, footers, or metadata can be recovered. We show how we can deploy this technique on a laptop in the field with a custom-built database with a billion rows that can perform more than a thousand lookups per second.

Bio:??? Simson L. Garfinkel is an Associate Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School. Based in Arlington VA, Garfinkel?s research interests include computer forensics, the emerging field of usability and security, personal information management, privacy, information policy and terrorism. He holds six US patents for his computer-related research and has published dozens of journal and conference papers in security and computer forensics.

Garfinkel is the author or co-author of fourteen books on computing. He is perhaps best known for his book Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 21st Century. Garfinkel?s most successful book, Practical UNIX and Internet Security (co-authored with Gene Spafford), has sold more than 250,000 copies and been translated into more than a dozen languages since the first edition was published in 1991.

Garfinkel is also a journalist and has written more than a thousand articles about science, technology, and technology policy in the popular press since 1983. He started writing about identity theft in 1988. He has won numerous national journalism awards, including the Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award two years in a row for his ?Machine shop? series in CSO magazine. Today he mostly writes for Technology Review Magazine and the technologyreview.com website.

As an entrepreneur, Garfinkel founded five companies between 1989 and 2000. Two of the most successful were Vineyard.NET, which provided Internet service on Martha?s Vineyard to more than a thousand customers from 1995 through 2005, and Sandstorm Enterprises, an early developer of commercial computer forensic tools.

Garfinkel received three Bachelor of Science degrees from MIT in 1987, a Master?s of Science in Journalism from Columbia University in 1988, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT in 2005.

PFT: Colston says he's playing against Chiefs

Tony RomoAP

Every week, the research staff at Football Night In America puts together extensive notes and research for every game.? Every Sunday morning (ideally), I review those notes.? Carefully (ideally).

In order to ensure that I review the notes, I?ll try (ideally) to post one intriguing fact per game, every Sunday morning.

Rams at Bears:? Michael Bush has had 25 or more carries five times in his career.? His team has never lost when that?s happened, and he has rushed for 684 yards in those five games combined.

Bill at Browns:? Trent Richardson became the first rookie to run for more than 100 yards and score a rushing and receiving touchdown since Samkon Gado in 2005.

Bucs at Cowboys:? Tony Romo has never lost to Tampa, winning all three times he has faced them.? In those three games combined, Romo has thrown 11 touchdown passes, zero interceptions, and has generated a passer rating of 144.8.

Jaguars at Colts:? With his next rushing touchdown, Maurice Jones-Drew will become the all-time leader in franchise history.? He?s currently tied with Fred Taylor at 62.

Jets at Dolphins:? Reggie Bush, who has a 6.8-yard rushing average against the Jets, has three straight 100-yard rushing games at home.

49ers at Vikings:? Move over Joe Montana and Steve Young.? Alex Smith has thrown 216 passes without an interception, a franchise record.

Chiefs at Saints:? Lost in the Saints? 0-2 start is the fact that Drew Brees is now only two games behind matching John Unitas with a touchdown pass in 47 straight games.

Lions at Titans:? Matthew Stafford has 2,504 passing yards since December 2011, most in the league.

Bengals at Redskins:? Since 2005, only Devin Hester has more punt-return touchdowns than Adam Jones.? (Making Hester?s total more impressive is the fact that he didn?t enter the NFL until 2006.)

Eagles at Cardinals:? Darnell Dockett has 28.5 sacks since 2007, the most of any defensive tackle in the league.

Falcons at Chargers:? Philip Rivers is 200 passing yards away from 25,000 for his career.

Texans at Broncos:? The Texans are the only team to start each of the last three seasons 2-0, but the Broncos are 2-0 at home all-time against the Texans.

Steelers at Raiders:? Darren McFadden has 15 receptions so far this season, tying him with Reggie Wayne for the AFC lead.

Patriots at Ravens:? With 21 passing yards, Tom Brady will pass his boyhood idol, Joe Montana, who had 40,551 in his career.

Packers at Seahawks:? Marshawn Lynch has rushed for more than 100 yards at home in six straight games, with 712 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

OSCE gives thumbs-down to Belarus poll

MINSK (Reuters) - International monitors gave a thumbs-down on Monday to a parliamentary election in Belarus, saying it was neither free nor fair, in a judgment that increased the isolation of President Alexander Lukashenko.

After election officials listed 109 winning candidates for parliament, all from pro-establishment parties, monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe said many opposition politicians had been blocked from taking part in Sunday's poll.

"This election was not competitive from the start," Matteo Mecacci, an OSCE coordinator, said in the statement. "A free election depends on people being free to speak, organize and run for office, and we didn't see that in this campaign."

The rubber-stamp parliament will bolster the power of the authoritarian Lukashenko, who has run the ex-Soviet state since 1994. But the OSCE report is sure to increase his international isolation and lock in place poor ties with the West.

"The blatant violations in these elections make it clear to everyone that Belarus is the last dictatorship in the heart of Europe," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said.

"Together with our European partners we will increase our efforts to push for the release of political prisoners, to strengthen Belarus civil society and to isolate President Lukashenko and his regime even more."

Lukashenko and his inner circle are under travel and other sanctions from the United States and the European Union.

Relations with the West nosedived when he cracked down on street protests against his re-election in December 2010. Scores of his opponents were arrested. Many now either lie low after periods in jail or have fled the country.

"UNACCEPTABLE PRESSURE"

Western monitoring agencies have not judged an election in the country of 9.5 million free and fair since 1995.

While not addressing the OSCE verdict directly, Lukashenko said he was always ready to listen to the arguments of Western governments. "But the main thing that is unacceptable to us is unnecessary 'a priori' pressure."

Belarussian election officials made clear that none of the 109 elected deputies represented any of the few moderate opposition parties that had fielded candidates.

"It seems that candidates from the opposition parties do not enjoy the trust of their electorate," Nikolai Lazovik, a senior election official, told a news conference.

The two main opposition parties, United Civic Party and the Belarussian People's Front, had called on people to go mushrooming or fishing rather than vote, in protest at the detention of political prisoners and election fraud. The turnout was officially put at 74 percent.

Human rights bodies say several opposition activists were detained or arrested in the run-up to the poll.

Lukashenko denounced the boycott call on Sunday, calling the opposition "cowards who have nothing to say to the people".

A report of preliminary findings published by the OSCE, which fielded 330 observers, said many prominent politicians who might have played a part in the election "remained in prison or were not eligible to register because of their criminal record".

"We were here in 2010 when some of those people were first arrested and put in jail, and we are sad that their voices could not be heard this campaign," Mecacci added.

ONE-SIDED COVERAGE

The OSCE also said the opposition had been severely limited in its access to state-run media, and there had sometimes been a lack of proper ballot-counting procedures.

"Coverage of the campaign did not provide a wide range of views. Candidates who called for an election boycott had their free access to media coverage denied or censored. Media coverage focused on the President and government, with minimal attention given to candidates," it said in a statement.

"While early voting and election-day procedures were assessed positively, the process deteriorated considerably during the count.

"A significant number of observers were not given a meaningful opportunity to observe the count and evaluated the process negatively in a significant number of the polling stations observed," it said.

The election has produced no new personalities to challenge Lukashenko's rule. Previous parliaments have initiated little legislation independently of the presidency.

Despite U.S. and EU sanctions, which prevent Lukashenko and his inner circle travelling anywhere in the West, Belarus has weathered a currency crisis that drained it of dollars and caused two big devaluations.

Russia has provided $4.5 billion in loans and investments in exchange for access to industrial assets such as pipelines pumping Russian gas to Europe.

With the deterioration in relations with the West, Belarus has moved closer to Russia, with which it has an open border and shares a common air defence network.

NY zoo: Tiger that mauled man 'did nothing wrong'

Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny speaks to the media during a news conference, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, in New York. (AP) ? A 400-pound tiger that mauled a man who jumped from a moving monorail train and plummeted over a protective fence at the Bronx Zoo will not be euthanized and "did nothing wrong," the zoo director said.

The mauling happened Friday afternoon in the Wild Asia exhibit, where a train with open sides takes visitors over the Bronx River and through a forest, where they glide along the top edge of a fence past elephants, deer and a tiger enclosure.

Passengers aren't strapped in on the ride, and 25-year-old David Villalobos apparently jumped out of his train car with a leap powerful enough to clear the 16-foot-high perimeter fence.

Villalobos was alone with a male Siberian tiger named Bashuta for about 10 minutes before he was rescued by zoo officials, who used a fire extinguisher to chase the animal away, said zoo director Jim Breheny. He suffered bites and punctures on his arms, legs, shoulders and back and broke an arm and a leg.

"When someone is determined to do something harmful to themselves," Breheny said, "it's very hard to stop that."

Bashuta was returned to a holding area where it usually sleeps at night and will not be euthanized, zoo officials said.

"The tiger did nothing wrong in this episode," Breheny said.

A hospital spokeswoman said the man was in stable condition Saturday but his family has requested that no further information be released.

"If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different," Breheny said.

After zoo staff chased the tiger off, Villalobos was instructed to roll under an electrified wire to get to safety, Breheny said. Zookeepers then called the tiger into a holding area, he said.

Bashuta is 11 years old and has been at the zoo for three years.

The Bronx Zoo, one of the nation's largest zoos, sprawls over 265 acres and contains hundreds of animals, many in habitats meant to resemble natural settings. Its exhibits include Tiger Mountain, Congo Gorilla Forest and World of Reptiles.

There are 10 tigers at the Wild Asia exhibit, but Bashuta was the only one on display at the time. There are no surveillance cameras in that area of the exhibit.

Zoo officials said they would review safety procedures but stressed that the situation was unusual.

"We review everything, but we honestly think we provide a safe experience," Breheny said. "And this is just an extraordinary occurrence ... somebody was deliberately trying to endanger themselves."

Larry Ellison, Oracle CEO, Gets $21 Million Pay Raise Despite Company's Stock Decline

BOSTON (Reuters) - Technology company Oracle Corp increased billionaire CEO Larry Ellison's compensation for last year by 24 percent.
Ellison, one of the most highly paid chief executive officers in the United States, and the world's sixth-richest man, according to Forbes, received total compensation for the year ended May 31 of $96.2 million, almost all of it in stock options. That compared with 77.6 million in the prior year.
His compensation rose during a period in which the company's shares fell 23 percent, underperforming the Nasdaq Composite Index, which was little changed during the same period.
Company spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined comment on the compensation package, which was disclosed in an annual filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The board's executive compensation committee said in that disclosure that its long-standing approach has been to "provide total compensation opportunities that are significantly above the average of our peer group."
That group includes Apple Inc, Cisco Systems Inc, International Business Machines Corp and Microsoft Corp.
Ellison, 68, has been CEO since he co-founded the company 35 years ago, making him the longest-running chief executive at a major Silicon Valley firm.
