Santorum strong across board in LA GOP primary

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum was turning in his most impressive performance yet with conservatives and blue-collar voters as he rode to triumph Saturday in Louisiana's Republican presidential primary, capturing robust support from nearly all types of people, according to preliminary results of an exit poll.

Highlighting his strength, the former Pennsylvania senator bested Mitt Romney for the first time among those calling the economy the campaign's dominant issue. As usual so far this year, more voters named the economy as their top concern than any other problem and more than 4 in 10 of them said Santorum was their candidate ? an embarrassment for Romney, the former venture capitalist who has claimed he knows best how to create jobs.

Romney retained his usual edge among voters whose most prized characteristic in a GOP candidate is finding someone who can defeat President Barack Obama this fall. But the Massachusetts governor's roughly 20 percentage point margin over Santorum on that question was one of his slimmest yet.

Overall, the results painted Louisiana as a state whose Republicans are tailor-made for Santorum, with large numbers of conservative and religiously motivated voters.

Santorum was winning the votes of nearly half of conservatives and tea party supporters. He was doing slightly better than that among those without college degrees ? a measure of blue-collar voters.

The devoutly and openly religious Santorum was also showing his usual strength among white born-again and evangelical voters, and among the nearly three-quarters of Louisiana voters who said it is important that they share religious beliefs with their candidate.

In another area where he was turning in one of his best showings, more than 4 in 10 Saturday cited Santorum as the candidate who best understands the typical American, nearly doubling the number citing Romney for that quality.

Only around 1 in 5 Louisiana voters said they were influenced by a comment by a Romney aide likening his campaign's tactics to an Etch A Sketch toy, even though it was one of the week's big political stories.

Those who said the remark played an important role in their choice were leaning toward Santorum over Romney by almost a 3-1 margin. But Santorum was also leading by double digits among those saying the comment was not significant for them.

Asked whether Romney's positions in the GOP primary might make him too conservative for more moderate voters in November's general election, Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom had said the campaign could start over in the fall. Romney's opponents said the remark shows he shifts his views too easily.

"Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up" and start all over again, Fehrnstrom said.

The few groups where Romney was leading included people earning over $200,000 a year and people saying it didn't matter if they shared religious beliefs with a presidential contender.

Around 2 in 3 Louisiana voters said they strongly support their candidate, one of the strongest measures of intensity in any state so far. But majorities also said they would be content if Romney, Santorum or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ultimately won the nomination.

Even as some national Republican leaders have started calling for Romney's rivals to drop out and begin uniting the party for the fall campaign, only about 1 in 4 Louisiana voters said they want the GOP contest to end quickly, even if their contender loses. Seven in 10 said they were happy for the party's internal battle to continue as long as their candidate wins.

Just over half of Louisiana voters said the economy is the issue they most care about, a bit more than the number of voters have typically said in other states.

The survey was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters left their polling places at 30 randomly selected sites in Louisiana. The survey involved interviews with 1,458 voters and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Jessica Sanchez Dishes on Idol

jsanchez.bmp
As American Idol hopefuls battled it out in the Top 10 this week, In Touch caught up on all the behind-the-scenes gossip with Idol favorite Jessica Sanchez.

The 16-year-old phenom exclusively told In Touch, ?We're all in a competition, but we don't see it in that way. We all want each other to win and we want to make it as far as we can.? But it?s not all fun and games backstage. ?We're all little divas in our own way. We all get in our zone and we all try to just keep to ourselves and just try to get into that moment.?

And although Jessica?s a judge favorite, she still gets star-struck by Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson. ?I choked up the first time I saw them because I was so surprised. I think we've all gotten used to them, but it is still a nerve-wracking thing having to be judged by them.?

PFT: Saints' DT: Payton suspension's 'not right'

96484369_crop_650x440Getty Images

As potential whistleblowers go, they don?t get much less sympathetic than tight end Jeremy Shockey.? But the man former Giants receiver Amani Toomer described last week as a ?bad teammate? and ?worse person? nevertheless has rights.

Specifically, Shockey has the right to not be outed as the person who cracked the case of the Saints? bounty program in 2011.? Especially if Shockey wasn?t the person who blew the whistle.

But that?s what happened on Wednesday.? Former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp identified Shockey as the whistleblower on Twitter.? Amazingly, NFL Network thereafter decided (apparently without consulting legal counsel, or perhaps relying on the advice of Lionel Hutz) to put Sapp on the league-owned air and repeat his contention.

Shockey has vehemently denied being the whistleblower.? And now he wants something to be done about the potential damage to his prospects for getting another job.

?Is the league going to come down on their own people when someone does something so wrong and outrageous?? Shockey told Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.? ?There should be a standard for punishment, like getting suspended or fined or losing your job.? If I say something about officials, the league fines me.?

Shockey said he has been contacted by multiple lawyers about possibly filing suit, and that he has heard nothing from the league.

?I?m 31 years old and this is not good,? Shockey said.? ?People have asked if this is going to hurt me in finding another team.? I don?t know, but it?s not helping me.?

Unfortunately for Shockey, there could be plenty of other factors keeping a team from signing him.? Still, being flagged as a potential whistleblower doesn?t help.? Even if no other NFL team will ever again use a bounty system, the outdated mentality of the football locker room shuns those who would break the code of silence in any way.

In Shockey?s case, the problem is that few would regard him as someone who succumbed to a crisis of conscience.? Instead, many would assume he was simply trying to get back at the Saints for cutting him.

That said, a league source has told us that Shockey wasn?t the whistleblower, and that he wasn?t involved in any way in the investigation.? If that?s true, why doesn?t the league simply say so?

Apparently, the NFL is so sensitive about potentially disclosing the name of the whistleblower that it doesn?t want to comment on the matter at all, even by expressly ruling someone out.? If that?s the reason for the silence, the league needs to accept the reality that the ship has sailed, via the disclosure of Shockey?s name on the league-owned network by an employee of the league-owned network, which necessarily makes him an employee of the league.

The problem isn?t Sapp.? That?s his style and his shtick, and it?s what makes him good on TV.? The problem is that the NFL failed to convene a meeting of its NFL Network and NFL.com staff in early March and explain that any reporting or speculation or discussion of the identity of the person who provided information that helped the NFL discover the existence of the bounty program was prohibited, whether because outing a whistleblower violates the law or because it potentially puts him at risk of retaliation by an unstable fan or because it will cause future whistleblowers to not cooperate or, perhaps the best reason of all, because it?s the right thing to do.

That didn?t happen, which means that in the heat of the process of determining the on-air content on one of the craziest offseason days in NFL history, a bad decision was made.? Before the NFL punishes any of them, the NFL needs to realize that the failure to issue what should have been an obvious directive directly caused the current problem.

Bobby Kotick: Message to American Veterans: Unemployed Veterans Deserve Call to Duty

As our veterans return from serving abroad to renew their lives as civilians, they must confront a new battle at home -- a country still facing persistent unemployment and sluggish economic growth. The heroes who put so much on the line to serve our country are now encountering the real danger of joining a generation of veterans whose rate of joblessness significantly exceeds the population as a whole.

According to the Employment Situation of Veterans' annual report which was released this week from The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans who served post 9/11 attacks was 12.1 percent in 2011, compared with the jobless rate for all veterans of 8.3 percent. Those hit the hardest from that group are our young male veterans, ages 18-24, which have an unemployment rate of 29.1 percent, higher than the 17.6 percent jobless rate of their young male non-veteran counterparts.

While the Federal Government is trying its best, there is one school of thought that says it's not a public policy issue in the first place. It's private enterprise that can create jobs and fill them. It's business that can train people and make them productive tax-payers. And it's America Inc. that has the most to gain from tapping this extraordinary human resource. With so many new veterans -- tested in battle, but novices in the job market -- looking for work, it will take a broad-based effort by American business to meet the needs of these returning warriors. America Inc. must embrace the challenge.

Fortunately, circumstances favor a major push by American business to recruit and hire veterans. First, there is broad consensus that the men and women of the American military have done a stellar job over the past 10 years and are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude. That wasn't the case in previous homecomings, in particularly after Vietnam. Many of those veterans paid the price for an unpopular war. Today is different. No matter where people stand on the policies that led to the conflicts, Americans recognize the depth of sacrifice and patriotism of our men and women in uniform. Everyone agrees these heroes deserve every advantage we can give them. Second, the infrastructure to help is in place. There are dozens of non-profits focused on helping returning veterans tackle the job market. What those existing organizations need are more resources. That's where American business can make the difference. There are four steps every company in the United States can take:

(1) Commit -- Resolve as an enterprise to identify and take actions to change the employment landscape for veterans as a group.

(2) Affiliate -- Find an organization or two to support, in particular those groups that provide veterans with the job placement, education and training needed to launch successful post-military lives.

(3) Act -- When hiring, recruit veterans; if expansion isn't in the picture, direct corporate giving towards veterans groups that provide employment assistance. Consider undertaking training, internships, apprenticeships or mentoring programs aimed at vets.

(4) Network -- Approach customers, vendors and other businesses and ask them to take part. Put vet hiring on the radar screen of local chambers of commerce and trade associations.

Would such an approach work? Certainly, the worthy non-profits exist. When Activision assembled an advisory council to find suitable veterans' organizations, it came back with more than half a dozen. In the last two years, organizations supported by a non-profit that Activision funds -- The Call of Duty Endowment -- have helped 700 vets find jobs and provided training and mentorship to another 2,500. This week, General James L. Jones USMC (RET.), former U.S. National Security Advisor, joined as my Co-Chairman of the Endowment in order to help shine a brighter light on this issue and expand our efforts.

Individual companies can make a difference too. In the last year, Activision has hired 70 former service members. Our business partners and studios have hired another 300. The model is simple. The impact is real. Imagine if thousands of U.S. companies got involved. Our returning vets are a huge untapped asset for commerce.

Veterans have the skills employers want -- discipline, motivation, leadership and the ability to work on a team. They have made the U.S. military the most effective and respected in the world. As America Inc. works to recover and compete on a global scale, what better resource could we add to our workforce? Our troops are home. It's time for American business to replace the yellow ribbons with help wanted signs.
