Roche, under fire, offers compromise in flu drug row

LONDON (Reuters) - Roche has offered an olive branch to scientific critics in a bid to end a bitter row over blockbuster flu drug Tamiflu that has led to calls for a boycott of the Swiss drugmaker's products.

Tamiflu has been approved by regulators worldwide and stockpiled by many governments in case of a global outbreak - but some researchers claim there is little evidence it works and have lobbied since 2009 for Roche to hand over all its data from clinical trials.

Sales of the drug hit close to $3 billion in 2009, due to the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, although they have since declined.

Roche's pharmaceuticals head said on Thursday he had written to the Cochrane Collaboration, a non-profit group that reviews trial data to assess the value of drugs, offering to set up a multi-party advisory board to review all the Tamiflu data.

The board of experts from academia and private institutions, including Cochrane critics, would then agree on what analyses were useful in assessing Tamiflu's public health role.

"We think that would be an appropriate, fair and transparent way of handling this debate," Daniel O'Day said in an interview.

O'Day said complete transparency had to be balanced against the need to protect patient privacy, respect commercial sensitivity and ensure the scientific merit of any statistical analysis.

He stopped short of matching a promise from rival GlaxoSmithKline to make patient-level data from all company-sponsored clinical trials available on a routine basis.

Roche said it had not handed over the full collection of data requested by Cochrane because the group refused to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Cochrane, meanwhile, has accused Roche of stonewalling and urged a boycott of the company's products until it publishes the missing data. Its campaign to force Roche's hand has been backed by the respected British Medical Journal.

EU AGENCY PROMISES OPENNESS

The new attempt by Roche to break the deadlock comes as regulators and healthcare experts meet in London to discuss ways to increase transparency over clinical trials.

As Reuters reported in July, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) aims to open its data vaults to systematic scrutiny, after a ruling by the European Ombudsman that keeping data secret is not compatible with the public interest.

Guido Rasi, executive director of the EMA, told the London meeting on Thursday that the question now was "how" to publish clinical trials data not "if" it should be released.

The move puts the EMA ahead of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in terms of data transparency.

The EMA stance is also forcing drug companies to review how far they can keep information they hold on medicines under wraps.

Most companies have committed in recent years to publishing results of clinical trials, either in journals or online, but that openness has not so far extended to the raw data that lies behind those trials.

Britain's GlaxoSmithKline, however, broke ranks last month when it announced that patient-level data from its clinical trials of approved and failed drugs would be made available to other researchers.

Roche's O'Day said his company responded to requests for such data on a case-by-case basis, provided scientists were prepared to sign confidentiality agreements if needed, but this did not mean all data should be released as a matter of course.

"To what level data will be shared proactively and constantly is something we need to discuss," he said.

A Roche spokesman said Cochrane had acknowledged receipt of its proposal for a Tamiflu advisory board but had not given any immediate response.

Toshiba tests robotic quadruped for nuclear plant inspection, hopes to help clean up Fukushima

The cleanup efforts at Fukushima's nuclear facility are been peppered with robotics: packbots, a refitted TALON, even a UAV - but Toshiba figures it could use at least one more. The firm's contribution is known only as the Quadruped walking robot, and it looks somewhat like Boston Dynamics' AlphaDog. Shuffling along on four double-jointed legs, the Quadruped can traverse uneven terrain and stairs at 0.6 mph, and is capable of exploring uninhabitable and irradiated areas for two hours before requiring a recharge. A second robot rides on the Quadruped's back, and can explore tight spaces for up to an hour when tethered to the its mentor. Toshiba is outfitting the duo with cameras and radiation dosimeters, and hopes to use them to help officials survey the damage in the plant's deadlier corners. Check out the machine's official press demonstration in the video after the break.

Father battled to save dying man after shooting in Bilblorough

A FATHER-of-three has described his horror after he fought to save a 28-year-old man who had been shot.
Police launched a murder enquiry after the man, believed to be Germaine Edwards, 28, of Bilborough, was found in Fairnley Road, Bilborough, at 5pm on Saturday.

Police at the scene in Fairnley Road, Bilborough, after the incident

Mr Edwards, said to have had a baby with his partner only four weeks ago, was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre but later died.
A Home Office post-mortem examination yesterday revealed he died from a gunshot wound.
Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
Martin Stout, who lives in Wigman Road, at the junction with Fairnley Road, was gardening when his 20-year-old son Jez ran home and told him someone had been shot.
Mr Stout said he ran across the road and told his son to call the emergency services.
"I could hear a lad shouting 'I've been shot, I've been shot'," he said.
"I found him lying in a front garden across the road. It was completely horrifying.
"I tried to keep him conscious by asking his name, age, and where he had been shot, because I couldn't see an actual wound on him.
"I turned him on both his sides and found a gunshot wound on his right side."
A police armed response team arrived and tried to help Mr Edwards to breathe.
Mr Stout added: "He kept saying 'I can't breathe', so they managed to put an airway in his mouth.
"And when he started losing consciousness they gave him CPR."
When the ambulance arrived Mr Stout helped to get Mr Edwards on the stretcher.
Mr Stout, who has three sons, aged 20, 25 and 30, said: "I didn't think at all in that moment. I just followed my instincts and tried to help the kid.
"The more I think about it, the more shocked I am. If it could happen to him, it could happen to anyone. I really feel for his family, my thoughts go out to them. I asked the police to pass on a message to his parents: 'If it's any consolation, he wasn't on his own in his last moments alive."
Saturday's incident drew residents on to the street, including Waseem Syed, of Wigman Road, who was at home when sister Rizwana Syed, 22, ran into the house screaming that someone had been shot. Mr Syed, 27, who ran outside, said: "When I got there, he was lying on the floor. It was dark, but I could see someone was massaging his chest and saying 'you're not breathing!'
"I've lived here for 12 years and never experienced anything like this."
Mr Syed's brother, Ali, 34, said he was struggling to make his children, aged 13, 12 and two, feel safe outside. "I can't believe this has happened."
A shop assistant at Premier Express, Chingford Road, described Mr Edwardsas "polite" and "decent".
Nottingham city councillor Derek Creswell, who represents Bilborough, said: "I can't remember the last time we had a shooting in Strelley, I've lived here 40 odd years and I'm surprised."
Graham Allen, MP for Nottingham North, said: "It's quite a peaceful area and I can't remember anything of this nature happening in the recent past."
New police crime commissioner Paddy Tipping said: "I think it's too early to comment until further enquiries have been made. Nottingham is safer than it's been for many years and we mustn't let fear of crime cloud our judgement about the safety of the city."
Superintendent Brian Beasley said: "Our enquiries are continuing to build up a picture of what happened last night but we still need to speak to anyone who might have seen or heard anything. Did you hear the sound of a firearm being discharged? We believe a silver Ford Fiesta carrying two or three men is linked to this death. Did you see it driving at speed or erratically through Bilborough, Wollaton, or Trowell.
"A vehicle matching the description was burnt out in the Cossall Lane area.
Call the incident room at West Bridgford on 0115 8446916 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

(AP) ? Airports, train stations and highways were expected to remain busy as people made their way home to reconnect with family and friends for Thanksgiving ? although some reunions might be bittersweet because of the damage and displacement caused by Superstorm Sandy.

For some, the once-sacrosanct harvest feast now starts the holiday shopping season ? and store openings keep getting earlier. Black Friday now starts on Thanksgiving Day itself at many national stores and some shoppers eagerly race from their dinner tables to line up for bargains, delaying their second helpings until they've purchased the latest toys or electronic devices.

The popular Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, attended by more than 3 million people and watched by 50 million on television, was scheduled to kick off in New York City.

This year, the giant balloons were to welcome Elf on a Shelf and Papa Smurf. A new version of Hello Kitty was to be included while Buzz Lightyear, Sailor Mickey Mouse and the Pillsbury Doughboy remained in the lineup. Real life stars were to include Carly Rae Jepsen and Rachel Crow of "The X Factor."

Other cities planned to have showy marching bands, cartoon character balloons, and musical extravaganzas, as well. Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit were among the big cities hosting parades.

Among the scheduled highlights were a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey spectacular in Chicago; Phillies star Ryan Howard and Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler in Philadelphia, and a group of 2012 U.S. Olympic champions in Detroit.

The holiday came as portions of the Northeast still were reeling from Superstorm Sandy's havoc, and volunteers planned to serve thousands of turkey dinners to people it left homeless or struggling.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his office would coordinate the distribution of 26,500 meals at 30 sites in neighborhoods affected by Sandy, and other organizations also were pitching in.

The Long Beach Surf Association and a charity called Surf for All were sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner in the Long Island community of Long Beach.

U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, whose New York district includes the heavily battered Rockaways neighborhoods, said he planned to stop by Thanksgiving dinners at three churches and a school.

"They are still giving thanks," Meeks said of his constituents. "They are thankful that they're alive and thankful to the people who are coming to help them."

Some used social media to coordinate Thanksgiving volunteering. Elle Aichele, of Toms River, N.J., started a Facebook page called Hurricane Sandy Thanksgiving Adopt a Family for Dinner.

"Please host a family that needs something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!" she wrote. "I have been thinking about what I can do to help and this is it!"

For some travelers, the need to stretch their money dictated how they were to arrive at their destinations.

Ashlee Denaro, 35, of Irvine, Calif., was at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday with her three children. The divorced woman had flown to Salt Lake City to pick up the children from her ex-spouse for a flight back to Southern California.

To economize, Denaro, a physical therapist, flew to Phoenix, changed planes for Salt Lake City, then returned to LAX instead of landing at her local Orange County airport. She then planned to drive an hour to Irvine.

The circuitous route saved her $500 on plane fare.

A Pennsylvania Turnpike service plaza just outside Pittsburgh was packed early Wednesday afternoon, with occasional lines of cars waiting for gas.

Linda Lapp-Stout, 64, was traveling from Cleveland to see family in Parkesburg, between Philadelphia and Lancaster. Lapp-Stout, who has driven a school bus for 32 years, said she was thankful for the holiday break and the warm weather, but worried about the economy.

"It's hard to even afford gas," she said.

Landscape designer Anne Murphy, of Gorham, Maine, was waiting for an Amtrak train at Boston's South Station as she and her husband, Ken, headed for Thanksgiving dinner in Gibbsboro, N.J. She said she travels smarter by searching for deals online, using cheaper airports further away from home and packing fewer bags to avoid baggage fees.

"I think we probably travel a little bit less because of costs, but we've definitely traveled more public transportation in order to save on gas," said Murphy, 56.

Gaming Proves Touchy With The New Wii U - AllThingsD

From crockpots to thermostats, it seems like everything now has a touchscreen instead of physical buttons. This week, Nintendo joined the club with a new videogame console, the Wii U, which uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen controller.

This remote control, called the GamePad, upgrades the overall gaming experience with features commonly found on smartphones like touch gestures, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a stylus for handwriting and a front-facing camera. Instead of using antiquated directional buttons to navigate the system, a tap on the screen can send a character into a game. A touchscreen keyboard simplifies writing messages and setting up accounts.

Activity on the GamePad?s screen is reflected on the TV, which means that more people can watch what players are doing in a game. Or you can play only on the GamePad, which frees up the big screen for people who want to watch TV, though the controller can?t be used on its own far away from the console.

Yet despite the Wii U?s refreshing features, its sluggish behavior makes it a product I can?t fully recommend. And some promised programs couldn?t be tested because they don?t function yet ? a delay that could frustrate some people.

Starting the system up for the first time took well over two hours because Wii U was downloading updates. In my four timed tests, the GamePad only held its charge for three hours and 30 minutes of use, and then needed about 2? hours to recharge. (It also works when plugged in, but isn?t as fun to use.) Opening each new program took close to 15 seconds. And I was constantly plagued by alerts that my GamePad had disconnected from the Wii console, even when I was four or six feet away from it in my small, city townhouse.

If you already own a Wii, its games and accessories ? like the Wii Balance Board ? are compatible with the new Wii U. Some programs that come loaded on the Wii U GamePad don?t work yet, including apps for YouTube, Amazon Instant Video and TVii, a tool that will let people use the GamePad to control their set-top boxes, TVs and DVRs (including TiVo). Nintendo says these are expected to work next month.

I spent hours playing with Wii U, specifically testing how the GamePad worked with various games, and my husband joined me for some of the testing. We tried New Super Mario Bros. U, (our favorite thanks to nostalgic memories of the original Nintendo), Nintendo Land, Sing Party and Just Dance 4.

There are currently over 30 games available for Wii U, and 20 more are expected by March.

In New Super Mario Brothers, I controlled my character (Luigi), while also tapping the GamePad?s touchscreen to add helpful climbing blocks in midair throughout the game. It was a little distracting to control my character with one remote while also tapping the GamePad screen, but I only did this when we really needed help in a level.

I was able to keep playing on the GamePad while my husband watched ?Monday Night Football? on the TV, though the sound of these games can still be heard through the GamePad speakers if they aren?t turned down, which may irk TV watchers. According to Nintendo, the GamePad won?t work if it?s more than 25 feet from the Wii U console, but, again, that distance was much shorter in my experience. Nintendo customer support hadn?t heard of the issue.

Of the games I tested, that which best illustrates the GamePad?s unique capabilities is Nintendo Land. Its 12 games range from Donkey Kong?s Crash Course, where a cart is moved through obstacles according to how you tilt the GamePad, and Takamaru?s Ninja Castle, which involves throwing ninja stars at enemies by sliding a finger across the GamePad?s touchscreen toward the TV.

Nintendo Land integrates with Miiverse, Nintendo?s Web-based social networking system, and I saw updates from lots of other users as the virtual character representing me (called a Mii) wandered around. I posted a few updates, writing in cursive with the GamePad stylus. One time when I tried to post an update, I got an error message saying servers were busy. Nintendo chalked this up to an ?overwhelming response? of people using Miiverse, and it worked again later.

The Deluxe version of Wii U, which costs $350, comes with Nintendo Land as well as some other extras, such as 32 gigabytes of internal memory versus 8GB in the $300 Basic Wii U. Both versions come with the GamePad.

The GamePad itself weighs just over a pound. A built-in camera is mounted just over its 6.2-inch touchscreen. I used the built-in microphone below the screen while playing a game in Nintendo Land: I blew air onto the mike to move a cart in a game. In addition to its touchscreen, the GamePad also has traditional controls, like a cross-shaped control pad and two mini joysticks. A Power button on the GamePad powers the Wii U console, too, while a TV button let me switch TV inputs without my TV remote.

Nintendo deserves credit for creativity. But like a player who can?t seem to get through a difficult level in a videogame, the Wii U?s faults hold it back from success.
