Science journal urged to retract Monsanto GM study

LONDON (Reuters) - The publisher of a much-criticized study suggesting genetically modified corn caused tumors in rats has come under heavy pressure from scientists to retract the paper and explain why it was ever printed.

The calls follow a report by Europe's food safety watchdog this week dismissing the study's findings.

Reed Elsevier, which published the study in its Food and Chemical Toxicology journal in September, said on Friday it was considering the criticisms and would let readers know if it concluded it needed to change the way it checked research.

In a statement on its website, the journal said "the paper was published after being objectively and anonymously peer reviewed, with a series of revisions made by the authors and the corrected paper then accepted by the editor."

Hundreds of scientists from around the world have questioned the research, which was written by French researcher Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and said rats fed on Monsanto's GM corn suffered tumors and multiple organ failure.

Genetically modified crops are deeply unpopular in Europe but are common in the United State where they have been grown and consumed for more than 15 years.

A day after the study was published, Seralini defended his work, saying it was the most detailed study on the subject to date.

But more than 700 scientists have signed an online petition calling on Seralini to release all the data from his research.

The petition, addressed directly to Seralini, says: "Only a full disclosure of the data can quell any uncertainties over the results you published."

The chief executive of the agricultural research centre Rothamsted Research, Maurice Moloney, said Seralini's study was "seriously deficient in its design, its execution and its conclusions" - failings compounded by "excessive secrecy around the data".

In a letter to the journal's managing editor Bryan Delaney, Moloney said it was "appalling that such work should appear in a respected Elsevier journal".

He also demanded to know how the paper managed to pass peer review - a process in which other scientific experts check a study, analyze its methods, question the authors and decide whether it is robust enough to give a reliable result.

Marc Van Montagu, president of the European Federation of Biotechnology, said this was "a dangerous case of failure of the peer-review system, which threatens the credibility not just of the journal but of the scientific method overall."

Cathie Martin, a scientist at the John Innes Centre for plant science and microbiology research, said in the light of such widespread criticism of Seralini's study, "is it not time for Food and Chemical Toxicology to retract the manuscript?"

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a statement earlier this week confirming the findings of its initial review saying Seralini's study had "serious defects" in design and methodology and "does not meet acceptable scientific standards".

Among other criticisms, the EFSA review panel said the authors had failed to establish appropriate control groups as part of the study, and had chosen a strain of rat that is prone to developing tumors during its normal lifespan.

Six separate national food safety bodies also asked to review the study - in France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium - also came to the same conclusions.

Internet service goes out across Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Internet service went down Thursday across Syria and international flights were canceled at the Damascus airport when a road near the facility was closed by heavy fighting in the country's civil war.

Activists said President Bashar Assad's regime pulled the plug on the Internet, perhaps in preparation for a major offensive. Cellphone service also went out in Damascus and parts of central Syria, they said. The government blamed rebel fighters for the outages.

With pressure building against the regime on several fronts and government forces on their heels in the battle for the northern commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels have recently begun pushing back into Damascus after largely being driven out of the capital following a July offensive. One Damascus resident reported seeing rebel forces near a suburb of the city previously deemed to be safe from fighting.

The Internet outage, confirmed by two U.S.-based companies that monitor online connectivity, is unprecedented in Syria's 20-month-old uprising against Assad, which activists say has killed more than 40,000 people.

Regime forces suffered a string of tactical defeats in recent weeks, losing air bases and other strategic facilities. The government may be trying to blunt additional rebel offensives by hampering communications.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned what she called the regime's "assault" on Syrians' ability to communicate with each other and express themselves. She said the move spoke to a desperate attempt by Assad to cling to power.

Syrian authorities often cut phone and Internet service in select areas to disrupt rebel communications when regime forces are conducting major operations.

The government sent mixed signals about the Internet outage but denied it was nationwide. The pro-regime TV station Al-Ikhbariya quoted Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi as saying that "terrorists" have targeted Internet cables, interrupting service in several cities.

Separately, state-run TV said the outage was due to a technical failure that affected some provinces, adding that technicians were trying to fix it.

Activists in Syria, reached by satellite telephones unaffected by the outage, confirmed the communications problems.

A young Syrian businessman who lives in an upscale neighborhood of Damascus, which some refer to as part of "the green zone" because it has remained relatively safe, sent a text message to an Associated Press reporter Thursday that said the Internet had been cut in his area and that mobile phone service was cutting out.

He said he was driving Wednesday through the Damascus suburb of Aqraba, near the airport, and saw dozens of rebel fighters for the first time in the area, riding in pickup trucks and motorcycles, and wielding AK-47s.

Their presence so close to the "green zone" may have led to the Internet being cut, said the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared government reprisal. He said the military was positioned a few hundred meters away from the rebel fighters and had built large speed bumps to enclose the area.

The opposition said the Internet blackout was an ominous sign that the regime was preparing a major offensive.

"I fear that cutting the Internet may be a prelude to a massacre in Damascus," said Adib Shishakly, a Syrian opposition figure from Cairo, Egypt. "The regime feels it is being choked off by rebels who are closing in on the capital from its suburbs. It's a desperate move, they are trying to sever communications between activists."

Renesys, a U.S.-based network security firm that studies Internet disruption, said in a statement that Syria effectively disappeared from the Internet at 12:26 p.m. local time.

"In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria's IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet," Renesys said. It added that the main autonomous system responsible for Internet in the country is the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment, and that "all of their customer networks are currently unreachable."

Akamai Technologies Inc., another U.S.-based company that distributes content on the Internet, also confirmed the complete outage.

Jim Cowie, the chief technology officer at Renesys, said the abruptness of the outage suggested it wasn't due to a severed cable. Syria has several cables that connect it to the outside world, and all of them would have had to be cut at once for a complete outage. A power outage or an intentional shutdown at central Syrian telecommunications facilities is a more likely cause, he said.

"We saw everything go in three to four minutes, which looks like a light switch," Cowie said.

He said the profile of the outage was similar to what the Egyptian government did in January 2011 during the Arab Spring uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Egypt switched off the Internet for five days, halting businesses, banking and ? at the height of the demonstrations ? the ability of protest leaders to organize and communicate with each other.

Bahrain's Sunni rulers also jammed cellphones during the military offensive on the protesters' encampment in the capital of Manama in March 2011. Internet service remained at a crawl when the Bahrain's military stormed the city's Pearl Square ? the headquarters of the revolt ? after weeks of street protests.

Ann Harrison, deputy program director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said in a statement that the group worried the communications were cut in Syria "to shield the truth of what is happening in the country from the outside world."

Thursday's violence appeared to be focused on southern suburbs near the Damascus international airport, forcing the military to shut the road to the facility. The surrounding districts have been strongholds of rebel support since the uprising began.

Austria Press Agency said two Austrian soldiers assigned to the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights were wounded after their convoy came under fire en route to the airport. The report, quoting the Defense Ministry spokeswoman, said the two did not appear to be critically hurt.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the regime has started a major offensive around the airport where rebels have been particularly active in recent weeks.

Abdul-Rahman, who relies on a network of activists in Syria, said large convoys of government reinforcements were seen heading south toward the airport, which is 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Damascus. The fighting was concentrated in and around the suburbs of Aqraba and Beit Saham, he said.

The Syrian Information Ministry later said the airport road was secure after attacks by "terrorist groups" on motorists, according to state TV. It was not immediately clear whether the road had been reopened.

The fighting prompted both Emirates airline and EgyptAir to cancel flights to Damascus.

Despite months of sporadic fighting and deteriorating security in Damascus, the airport has remained open.

But EgyptAir said in a statement that the airline will halt all flights to Damascus and Aleppo starting Friday, until further notice. EgyptAir head Rushdi Zakaria said the decision was due to deteriorating security conditions in Syria.

Syrian TV also said government forces were chasing "al-Qaida elements" around Damascus, mostly in the eastern suburbs of Douma and the southern suburb of Daraya.

The Observatory said the regime used warplanes to hit districts including Daraya, where fighting has raged for days.

The operation around Damascus comes days after rebels made significant advances in the area. Last week, they captured a major helicopter base just outside the capital.

In the southern city of Daraa, where the uprising began, rebels detonated a car bomb near the house of a senior member of the country's ruling Baath Party, killing him and his three bodyguards, activists said. Rebels frequently target regime figures and military commanders.

NY appeals court stays Argentina debt ruling

NEW YORK ? Argentina got some breathing room Wednesday in its billion-dollar debt showdown as an appeals court indefinitely suspended a federal judge's ruling that threatened to push the country into default.

The two-paragraph appellate court order sets a Feb. 27 date for oral arguments in the case, averting a Dec. 15 deadline for a $1.3 billion payment that Argentina has refused to make despite losing its case against NML Capital Ltd., an investment fund that specializes in suing over unpaid sovereign debts.

Judge Thomas Griesa had ordered the government of President Cristina Fernandez to pay the money into an escrow account even as it pursued its final appeals.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals gave no explanation for staying the order, but all parties in the case now have two more months to prepare for hearings.

Fernandez had called the ruling by Griesa "judicial colonialism" and said she won't pay anything to what she calls "vulture funds." She said that if it was allowed to stand, the judge's ruling would give financial speculators a huge advantage over countries that need to restructure debts and protect their citizens as they grow their way out of economic crises.

Griesa ordered the Bank of New York to stop Argentina's Dec. 15 payment to the vast majority of its other bondholders if the government didn't pay the plaintiffs by then, a draconian remedy that threatened to set off a fiscal crisis.

If the ruling stands and the plaintiffs get paid, then other groups holding more than $11 billion in defaulted Argentine debt would pounce on the precedent and demand immediate payment as well. But if Fernandez keeps her word and refuses to pay, then Argentina would fall into default on all the rest, and more than $20 billion would come due.

Lawyers for NML Capital declined to comment on the stay. Argentine officials offered no immediate reaction.

Sean F. O'Shea, an attorney representing a group of bondholders holding the $20 billion in debts, called the stay a "total victory for our position." He said it showed the appeals court judges "understand the importance of these issues and are going to give it a full hearing."

"We were really concerned something was happening that was off the rails in terms of the constitutional issues and equity. We fully expect the 2nd Circuit will put it right," he added.

In court papers, O'Shea and other lawyers called Griesa's ruling a "well-intentioned but misguided attempt by the district court" to assist plaintiffs who are market speculators collect a judgment from Argentina.

Even the threat of the Dec. 15 deadline brought serious consequences. In the week since Griesa ruled in favor of the NML Capital fund run by billionaire Paul Singer and other plaintiffs, the cost of maintaining Argentina's overall debts soared in trading on U.S. and European bond markets, and the cost of insuring these debts through credit default swaps spiked.

Fitch's Ratings Service downgraded Argentine bonds, already considered junk, to one step above default, predicting the government won't pay. These and other reactions have made borrowing even more expensive for any company operating in Argentina, and analysts were predicting that with credit drying up and the country's recession deepening, social unrest would lead to political upheaval.

Earlier Wednesday, Fernandez said the judge's remedy was particularly unfair since Singer and other holdouts had refused two opportunities to swap the debt left over from Argentina's world record 2001 default with new bonds, which the government has reliably paid since 2005.

Bondholders who accepted the swaps got less than 30 cents for the nominal dollar value of the original debt, representing a huge relief package that has enabled Argentina to quickly grow its way out of an abysmal crisis that left half the population in poverty.

Argentina has the goodwill to keep its promises to these restructured bondholders, Fernandez told Argentine executives during a joint appearance with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. "We're going to honor our commitment, as a country that has recovered its self-esteem," she said to heavy applause.

Argentina has more than $45 billion in foreign currency reserves, but that money is committed to a slew of government subsidies and economic stimulation programs.

O'Shea said he was certain Argentina's bonds would rally now that the markets have certainty that the country's December debt installments will be paid. "The market will realize calmer heads have prevailed," he said.

Economy Minister Hernan Lorenzino said earlier Wednesday that the government was considering asking Argentina's congress to reopen the 2005 and 2010 debt exchanges, but only to offer the holdouts yet another opportunity to accept the same steep "haircuts."

That's a more flexible position than Argentina has shown in years, but hardly enough to satisfy the plaintiffs now that the judge has ordered them to be paid 100 percent plus interest for the debt that many of them bought for pennies on the dollar in 2002, when Argentina's economy was in ruins.

And since clauses in these bond contracts say that everything Argentina owes could come due immediately, and in full, if the government "voluntarily" changes the terms of its debt restructurings, Lorenzino stressed that Argentina won't make any move without a definitive order from the U.S. courts.

Shell sees big boost from buyout of Chesapeake's Permian acreage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell expects "years and years" of production from oil and natural gas acreage it recently bought from Chesapeake Energy Corp and plans to add more drilling rigs, the head of Shell's Americas operations said on Thursday.

Shell paid $1.94 billion last September for 618,000 acres in the Permian Basin, a vast source of oil and natural gas in the western part of Texas.

Shell and other global energy companies including Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are buying more oil and gas assets in North America as they struggle to boost production in a sector where a vast amount of resources is located and tightly controlled by countries like Brazil and Russia.

Much of the Permian Basin land, which Chesapeake was desperate to sell to get needed cash, is considered prospective at best, and it only has seven drill rigs in operation currently producing 26,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, low by industry standards.

Shell believes the land holds potential to produce much more, and expects the rig count to rise to 10 "over a period of time," Marvin Odum, president of the Dutch oil major's U.S. arm, Shell Oil Co, and director of Shell's Upstream Americas division, said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday.

"We made a very good acquisition here," Odum said. "This is a relatively small payment for a lot of resources that are reasonably well-proven, but yet to be developed, and a very nice suite of acreage that's more in the appraisal/exploration phase."

Shell had little comment about the deal when it was first announced and has been quiet about production plans.

The company was attracted to the land because it already is producing, meaning production has been proved viable, Odum said. At the same time, Shell was intrigued about exploration possibilities elsewhere on the acreage, he said.

Greece, markets satisfied by EU-IMF Greek debt deal

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The Greek government and financial markets were cheered on Tuesday by an agreement between euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund to reduce Greece's debt, paving the way for the release of urgently needed aid loans.

The deal, clinched at the third attempt after weeks of wrangling, removes the biggest risk of a sovereign default in the euro zone for now, ensuring the near-bankrupt country will stay afloat at least until after a 2013 German general election.

"Tomorrow, a new day starts for all Greeks," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras told reporters at 3 a.m. in Athens after staying up to follow the tense Brussels negotiations.

After 12 hours of talks, international lenders agreed on a package of measures to reduce Greek debt by more than 40 billion euros, projected to cut it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.

In an additional new promise, ministers committed to taking further steps to lower Greece's debt to "significantly below 110 percent" in 2022.

That was a veiled acknowledgement that some write-off of loans may be necessary in 2016, the point when Greece is forecast to reach a primary budget surplus, although Germany and its northern allies continue to reject such a step publicly.

Analyst Alex White of JP Morgan called it "another moment of ?creative ambiguity' to match the June (EU) Summit deal on legacy bank assets; i.e. a statement from which all sides can take a degree of comfort".

The euro strengthened, European shares climbed to near a three-week high and safe haven German bonds fell on Tuesday, after the agreement to reduce Greek debt and release loans to keep the economy afloat.

"The political will to reward the Greek austerity and reform measures has already been there for a while. Now, this political will has finally been supplemented by financial support," economist Carsten Brzeski of ING said.

PARLIAMENTARY APPROVAL

To reduce the debt pile, ministers agreed to cut the interest rate on official loans, extend the maturity of Greece's loans from the EFSF bailout fund by 15 years to 30 years, and grant a 10-year interest repayment deferral on those loans.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Athens had to come close to achieving a primary surplus, where state income covers its expenditure, excluding the huge debt repayments.

"When Greece has achieved, or is about to achieve, a primary surplus and fulfilled all of its conditions, we will, if need be, consider further measures for the reduction of the total debt," Schaeuble said.

Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said ministers would formally approve the release of a major aid installment needed to recapitalize Greece's teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers on December 13 - after those national parliaments that need to approve the package do so.

The German and Dutch lower houses of parliament and the Grand Committee of the Finnish parliament have to endorse the deal. Losing no time, Schaeuble said he had asked German lawmakers to vote on the package this week.

Greece will receive 43.7 billion euros in four installments once it fulfils all conditions. The 34.4 billion euro December payment will comprise 23.8 billion for banks and 10.6 billion in budget assistance.

The IMF's share, less than a third of the total, will be paid out only once a buy-back of Greek debt has occurred in the coming weeks, but IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the Fund had no intention of pulling out of the program.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann welcomed the deal but said Greece still had a long way to go to get its finances and economy into shape. Vice Chancellor Michael Spindelegger told reporters the important thing had been keeping the IMF on board.

"It had threatened to go in a direction that the IMF would exit Greek financing. This was averted and this is decisive for us Europeans," he said.

The debt buy-back was the part of the package on which the least detail was disclosed, to try to avoid giving hedge funds an opportunity to push up prices. Officials have previously talked of a 10 billion euro program to buy debt back from private investors at about 35 cents in the euro.

The ministers promised to hand back 11 billion euros in profits accruing to their national central banks from European Central Bank purchases of discounted Greek government bonds in the secondary market.

BETTER FUTURE

The deal substantially reduces the risk of a Greek exit from the single currency area, unless political turmoil were to bring down Samaras's pro-bailout coalition and pass power to radical leftists or rightists.

The biggest opposition party, the hard left SYRIZA, which now leads Samaras's center-right New Democracy in opinion polls, dismissed the deal and said it fell short of what was needed to make Greece's debt affordable.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is proportionately the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big cut this year in the value of privately-held debt. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more bearable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF insisted that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt if Athens faithfully implements its budget and reform program.

The main question remains whether Greek debt can become affordable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

Germany and its northern European allies have hitherto rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens, but European Union officials believe that line may soften after next September's German general election.

Schaeuble told reporters that it was legally impossible for Germany and other countries to forgive debt while simultaneously giving new loan guarantees. That did not explicitly preclude debt relief at a later stage, once Greece completes its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

But senior conservative German lawmaker Gerda Hasselfeldt said there was no legal possibility for a debt "haircut" for Greece in the future either.

At Germany's insistence, earmarked revenue and aid payments will go into a strengthened "segregated account" to ensure that Greece services its debts.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has fulfilled its program would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as forgoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

The ministers agreed to reduce interest on already extended bilateral loans in stages from the current 150 basis points above financing costs to 50 bps.

Egypt's Morsi insists he won't be another dictator

As Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said he took the power of the courts to impose stability, protesters argued he is becoming a dictator. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Responding to violent protests over the last four days, Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi insisted that he assumed control of the judiciary to stabilize the country ? not to concentrate power.

Protesters say that Morsi, who became the country?s first democratically-elected president on June 30, issued a decree of near-total executive power to elevate himself to Pharaoh-like status. They also worry that Morsi and his supporters will draft a constitution that will put Egypt on track to becoming like religiously conservative Iran or Turkey.

Morsi?s supporters say his control of the courts is temporary ? a necessary move, they say, because the courts are governed by former President Hosni Mubarak appointees who have blocked the country's transition to democracy.

According to the BBC, a statement by the presidency emphasized that Morsi's measures were implemented to avoid ?attempts to undermine democratically elected bodies and preserve the impartiality of the judiciary."

Regardless of Morsi?s intent, the fallout has been acute. Six of his aides resigned Sunday, and stock markets plunged by 10 percent in Egypt. Youth protesters attacked the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party ? with which Morsi is affiliated ? killing one and wounding 60. Fights have even broken out between journalists covering the escalating tension.

The BBC?s Jon Leyne wrote that Morsi?s actions ? whether na?ve or over-confident ? could result in sectarian struggle. Morsi issued his decree on Thursday, the day after he was lauded by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for helping to negotiate a truce between the Palestinians and Israel.

In Cairo?s Tahrir Square, NBC?s Jim Maceda reported that Egyptians are understandably nervous, given their political history. Mubarak maintained military rule for three decades before he was overthrown during the Arab Spring revolution in February 2011.

That sentiment was reflected in a statement by the liberal Constitution party, according to the Guardian: "We are facing a historic moment in which we either complete our revolution or we abandon it to become prey for a group that has put its narrow party interests above the national interest."

Morsi says he is committed to finding ?common ground? with other political parties, and he plans to meet with senior judges on Monday to work toward a compromise, the BBC reported. Meanwhile, both sides have called for mass protests in Cairo on Tuesday.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland weighed in on Friday, Al Jazeera reported, saying that Morsi?s declarations ?raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community.?

"One of the aspirations of the revolution was to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution," Nuland said.

Journalist and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster spent two years in Louisiana working on his documentary SoLA: Louisiana Water Stories. Just as he was completing his survey of the major water issues facing the state, the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010.

??"We stopped finishing the filming," Bowermaster says. "We went back and reinterviewed people. But it wasn't about the events of the rig ? all of a sudden the story of water and Louisiana was on the front page and you could watch the disaster on the CNN ticker live and in real time."

??Initially, Bowermaster was interested in the dead zone in the Gulf caused by chemicals dumped into river waters from 31 states that feed the Mississippi River. In SoLA, he looks at the loss of coastal wetlands caused by the construction of industrial canals and other water management projects. He compiles the damages caused by pollution from the petrochemical industry and explores the changes to the Atchafalaya Basin, North America's largest contiguous swamp.

??Besides presenting a frightening assessment of the damage to the environment and the effects on the people who depend on it, such as fishermen, he got a warning from many Louisianans he interviewed.

??"People said, 'Whatever you do, don't let this shit happen in your backyard,'" he says.

??That was the inspiration for his next film, Dear Governor Cuomo, which he just completed and will screen (along with SoLA) at the Social Change Film Festival & Institute in New Orleans this week. It's about fracking (aka hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking), the process of extracting natural gas by forcing a mixture of water and chemicals into the ground. Bowermaster lives in New York state, which does not yet allowed fracking (34 states do), but has been exploring the possibility. His just-released film is part concert, part fracktivism, as it combines an anti-fracking concert event with information on the dangers of fracking.

??The Social Change Film Festival & Institute moves to different locations for each event. It includes feature films, documentaries and short films. Water issues are the main theme for the New Orleans event, and one of the highlights is Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin's film shot in south Louisiana. The weekend event also includes panel discussions and workshops on filmmaking and activism held at Dillard and Loyola universities, the Contemporary Arts Center and Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center.

??Bowermaster began his career in journalism and became known for a National Geographic documentary series he did about the oceans. He used kayaking and adventure stories as a means to explore water issues around the?globe.

??"We went kayaking in Vietnam, where one-third of the population lives on the coast and deals with pollution," he says. "We went to the Adriatic, where there are no fish because it was overfished. We went to Antarctica, where the story was about the ice melting faster than anyone predicted."

??Since 1999, Bowermaster had been making one documentary a year about water issues around the globe. In the '90s, he wrote a story for Audubon magazine about Dow Chemical polluting waters in Morrisonville, La. In 2008, he wanted to make his next documentary in the United States.

??"My interest is the relationship between man and water," Bowermaster says. "There's no better state than Louisiana for that. ... In south Louisiana, just about every family has someone who works in the fishing industry and someone who works in the oil?industry."

??At the festival, Bowermaster will screen both films and talk about how he is both a filmmaker and fracktivist in Dear Governor Cuomo. He helped organize the protest concert (featuring Natalie Merchant, Joan Osborne, Citizen Cope and others) and he documented it.

??The Social Change festival also screens Forgotten Voices: Women In Bosnia by standup comic Jennifer Rawlings, who got her start at the Improv in Los Angeles with the help of Budd Friedman. Rawlings also does a lot of tours to entertain American servicemen, and her ongoing tour is titled I Only Smoke in War Zones.

??Since 1999, Rawlings has made one to three trips a year to entertain the troops, often in war zones. She has toured Afghanistan and Iraq, at times performing in areas that were taking shell and mortar?fire.

??Her entry into filmmaking involved little more?than?buying a Panasonic DVX camera and setting out for Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

??In 2007, she read a news story in which a woman in Darfur told a reporter she hoped the fighting would end soon so things could return to normal. But Rawlings knew the damage and upheaval wrought by war would linger for decades.

??The comedian had performed several times in Bosnia, and she wanted to talk to women who had survived the war and its aftermath. She sought out women of different socioeconomic and religious backgrounds and recorded their?stories.

??"I started by asking about their happiest moments," Rawlings says. She also delved into the more serious and enduring aspects of the conflict.

??"I am a firm believer that individuals can have an impact on the world ? one person at a time, one conversation at a time," Rawlings says.

??Being a comedian helps her reach audiences.

??"A lot of people don't recognize you can have light?in dark moments," she says. "You can use humor. If you can get people to laugh, you can get them to listen."

Among the most important techniques developed in atomic physics over the past few years are methods that enable the storage and cooling of atoms and ions at temperatures just above absolute zero. Scientists from Bangalore and Mainz have now demonstrated in an experiment that captured ions can also be cooled through contact with cold atoms and may thus be stored in so-called ion traps in a stable condition for longer periods of time. This finding runs counter to predictions that ions would actually be heated through collisions with atoms. The results obtained by the joint Indo-German research project open up the possibility of conducting future chemical experiments to generate molecular ions at temperatures as low as those that prevail in interstellar space.

Scientists of the Raman Research Institute in the Bangalore in India and the Institute of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany combined two techniques for their experiment. They captured neutral atoms in a magneto-optic trap, cooled them with laser light to a temperature close to absolute zero at minus 273.15 degrees Celsius, and also stored charged particles in an ion trap. For this purpose, Professor Dr. Gnter Werth had to set a Paul trap as used in Mainz in India, where it was combined with a magneto-optic trap. It was thus possible to trap ions and cold atoms at one and the same location to observe their development.

"The question was whether it would work at all," explains Werth. The experiment with rubidium ions and rubidium atoms then showed that the particles did actually exchange energy. The ions were effectively cooled during a collision with the cold atoms. As the scientists write in their article in Nature Communications, there are two fundamental processes that determine the outcome. During continuous cooling, the atoms indirectly extract energy from the trapped ions. In addition, the collision between ions and atoms causes both to exchange their charges and results in the transformation of a 'hot' ion into a 'cold' ion. As it is possible to maintain a constant concentration of atoms in the reservoir of the magneto-optic trap, the system has the capacity to cool a larger number of ions without immediate exhaustion of the atom reservoir.

The interaction between ions and atoms is particularly interesting to physicists because it is thought that similar interactions might also occur in the coldness of outer space. "The expectation is that the interaction of ions and atoms at very low temperatures will result in the formation of molecular ions. This is a process that we believe also occurs in inter-stellar space," says Werth.

Mauritanian president returns from France

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? Thousands of Mauritanians lined the street from the airport to welcome back President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who went to France for five weeks of medical treatment after being accidentally shot in a friendly fire incident.

His return Saturday puts an end to speculation over the state of his health, as well as over the future of Mauritania. Analysts had warned that his extended departure could create the instability needed for another coup in this desert nation which has suffered six since the 1970s. Aziz, a military general, came to power himself in a 2008 coup.

The 55-year-old leader waved to the crowd, and told reporters that he "at no point worried about a coup d'etat by the army," adding that he had "total confidence in the Mauritania military."
